UAW on strike starting tonight

They probably don’t care and are laughing at us. They can wreck havoc with a 100th of what we spend, since this is not how wars are fought these days.

Agreed. I’m on the frontlines with these sort of things, I don’t need to self-validate…

Hopefully we get back on topic.

I absolutely support the unions ending the strike and accepting a reasonable offer. What GM initially offered seemed reasonable to me.

You say you disagree but then you say exactly what I said that US leads the world in healthcare. That is what I’ve been saying from the beginning. That we have the best healthcare. I never said it’s the cheapest or most equitable. In any free market system there will be inequity. The only systems with very little inequality is when everyone is equally miserable like Venezuela.

Or Canada or Germany or the Netherlands.

True but I commend everyone for staying civil and we have had a nice debate.

But what’s the point of having the best unaffordable healthcare?
My mother have not seen a doctor in 5 years because her deductible is $10k. This healthcare can be best or worst - it won’t matter to her, would it? She will wait until she’d dying since she can’t do preventive care.

Agreed! I have not seen a civil conversation online in this topic for awhile.

And that is where I agree with you 100%. The system is very broken. All I am saying is saying we don’t have the best healthcare because it’s to expensive is like saying Lamborghinis suck because I can’t buy one. Two things can be true at the same time. Yes it’s the best and yes it’s too expensive.

Not too far off topic though, US spending priorities is why we are in this hole to begin with. US budget is at record deficit, while GM got a huge tax cut, laid off workers, moved plants to other countries, but threw some scraps to remaining employees.

But you can live without owning a Lamborghini. It’s completely optional to buy a Lamborghini. The vast majority of people are perfectly happy driving around in a Škoda Octavia provided by the same parent company.

The US healthcare equivalent is you can absolutely have the Lambo but if you can’t pass the credit check for the lease, then you’re shit outta luck. Into the bin you go.

I vote this for the worst comment of the thread. What is this fascination with Venezuela when talking about healthcare or social programs? Do they somehow have the best system out there? A corrupt country will fail no matter what governing system they employ.

No they have the worst system out there. My comment was referencing inequality, not healthcare. The fascination with Venezuela is it is an example occurring right now of what happens when socialism is taken to its inevitable conclusions. If no one was talking about bringing socialism to the US I doubt it would be talked about so much.

Interesting take on this. So because the particular paper that you mentioned has a purported “agenda” the story should be dismissed out of hand?

Here’s another paper with the same, general narrative:
$461,646 in Pay for One Worker: M.T.A. Overtime Scrutinized by Prosecutors

I’d just get a better source, like the one you provided. It was very detailed and informative without the history of using hyperbolic statements like “unions are destroying America” or “Bezos exposes Pecker” It is a NYC tabloid after all.

Labor unions continue to be the lifeblood of America, fully responsible for creating the American middle class. Without a strong and vibrant middle class, there are no consumers to buy products, including automobile leases. I fully support the striking workers. When you have CEOs making tens of millions of dollars a year, asking for a respectable and decent wage should not be a bad thing.

100 bucks says car and watch works for the union lol

Felt like read political ad word for word recited by memory.

I agree with you on the last statements. I just don’t believe head in unions are concerned with that request rather their own pockets and being in bed with politicians. But I like the idea. Just don’t see anyone actually working towards that.

Ask Hostes workers how that stance worked out for them. I doubt union bosses nor execs cried much after BK was filed.

A great book was written on that tragic event which I read a few years ago.

Not if the flight cost more than the work. Dr. Nick also will tell you tough cookies if he goofs.

You’re saying like this is a bad thing, when legalized bribery, i.e. lobbying, is a way of life in the US political system. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be a fair fight.
