Sold one to CarMax

You may want to follow up with VCFS and your town. Volvo estimates property taxes before they get the actual bill, and it is usually much higher than it should be. At least in VA.

I didn’t realize that VA taxes leases like a business use vehicle.

Not sure what you mean. I was talking about property tax where you get credit for personal use, but pay in full for business.

That’s what I meant, I think. There’s no personal use exemption with leases I believe. Which is odd but I was just remarking how easy it would be to go lease something and not have known because Virginia does it so differently than DC and MD.

Is there PPT in MD and DC? I don’t think so.

No they don’t but it would never have occurred to me that Virginia would treat leases like this (aside from the PPT) because the general experience in MD/DC is so different. Paying the full tax on the car rather than the payment or the depreciated value during the lease as an example.

In any case, Virginia absolutely appears to be discouraging auto leasing.

Yes sucks in VA, I’m seeing some movement on state incentives with EVs, lets see is that comes to fruition. With 80%+ of EVs being leased I would love to see not tax or no PPT thrown in on them. I’m not holding my breath…

Fingers crossed.

I checked my carmax offer again this morning and it’s up $400 for my Honda Accord. Glad that I didn’t sell it last week.

The real kick in the nuts is the ā€œhighway use feeā€ that is added to my annual registration, more than doubling it, because I’m not paying any gas tax with an EV.

Which is odd because you’re definitely paying tax on the electricity and using a lot more than people without an EV.

Just another reminder there is Northern Virginia and then the rest of Virginia…

Does anyone know how many miles you can put on the car between the time you get an offer and the time you sell it? I know you have 7 days but not sure of the mileage allowance? Thanks!

How is MD different? It taxes the selling price of a leased car at 6% (almost 40% more than VA’s 4.15 or 4.25)

No personal property Tax.

He said MD is different even aside from the PPT

I thought MD taxed on the depreciation not on the whole sale price. Clearly I was mistaken.

Wait - just want to confirm. Car max is buying leases before they end?

Yes, but I believe it depends on the state you live in and the lease finance company. https://www.carmax.com/sell-my-car

Carmax has been buying leases before term end for at least 7 years that I know of. I sold a GMC Terrain leased thru GMAC back in 2015 to them.

They will buy out any lease as long as the bank allows for 3rd party buy outs. There are some weird rules that banks have- such as in Florida, at least, they have to send the payoff check to a local dealer for Mazda, Ford, and Nissan, who then deposit the check, and then the account gets closed out.
