Sold one to CarMax

Do you if Carmax has the same 60 day maturity rule as Carvana? (i.e. Carvana will not buy back a lease if it is within 60 days of maturity).

Just sold my 2018 BMW X2 to Carmax. Got the car appraised on Saturday 4/24 but had to return today because BMWFS is closed over the weekend. I had to be in store for BMWFS to give a 3rd party dealer payout. They emailed it over immediately. In my case, the dealer payout amount was just the residual value of the vehicle. No other fees or taxes. The lease was due to be grounded tomorrow but the BMW rep said not a problem. They just made a note on the account that a payoff check is coming. It was a pretty easy process.

I think it’s more of a bank situation than a Carmax rule. Someone in another post the other day went to sell their Acura to Carmax and Carmax said they couldn’t buy it as the Acura owners just made their last payment. They ended up calling Acura/Honda financial and did a lease extension and last I heard were going to sell it the next day or so once the extension went thru on the banks end. If in doubt- call your financial institution and request a lease extension. Most banks offer it no questions asked especially in covid times.

2018 Accord EX-L 2.0 with 11500 miles, 8 months left on lease

Carvana: 22800 or so
Vroom: 23353
ALGo: 26300 online, 23000 after the video call, asked for CarMax quote to match but no response after
CarMax: 24800 online, 24000 in person on 4/13, all other quotes were received/confirmed 4/13 too. I left my wallet home, doh, and could not sell it then with no driver’s license on me.

Drove to Langhorne PA again on Saturday 4/20 and was the first person in when they opened at 9. Done in 1hr, no comment on mileage as it had 260 more from driving home to Jersey City and back (to address the question above about mileage limit on the offer, not sure it exists!)

After checking my account twice a day, this afternoon (4/27) it was updated with the payoff amount received on 4/23 so I am to pay termination plus NJ tax.

Good experience except that they never pick up the phone at that location

FYI - CarMax in Hartford CT does not answer their phone either

You mentioned that your online quote from carmax at 24,800 went down to 24000 in person. Did they tell you why it went down by $800?
I ask because I have done this a couple of weeks ago with my Accord and they didn’t bring it down from the online appraisal. My friend is about to bring in his and I told him unless there are significant differences between what was inputted online and what they find when they do their inspection.

No, they didn’t and I figured that’s fair because it was the highest offer by far and I wanted to make room for the new lease. I had some curb rash and a visible ding that I disclosed to Vroom etc. I even estimated the condition as clean and not outstanding.

Because I didn’t wait for the quote and preferred to have it emailed, it didn’t arrive that night and I had to call to get it resent. I reached someone in the call center in Atlanta who gave me the link to complete the online quote (though I did the in person appraisal). It consisted of uploading 10 pictures of the car that dealers would put bids on. That was odd and he admitted it is a new process for them. Indeed, if I tried to get an online quote now, it is not possible due to my location etc. and it asks to make an appointment.

Sold a 2018 Mazda CX-5 to CarMax for a easy $3500 profit :money_mouth_face:

Similar to what other site members reported, the transaction was pushed to a weekday because Mazda Capital is OOO during the weekend.

Sold a 2018 Crosstrek 6spd base to carmax. They cut me a check around ~$4,500.

I’m amazed how easy it was. Walked in and got appraised. They matched the amount I was given online prior to me going in, signed some paperwork and check was in my hand.

2019 Nissan Leaf SV Plus w/Technology package. 16900 miles. Lease vehicle.

Carvana: $19,653
Vroom: $16,850
Shift: no offer
Carmax: $23,400 (online offer)

Stopped at Carmax (Salem, OR) for an inspection they offered $25,000! I had the car for 11 months and I got a check for ~$2600. The equity cover almost all the past payments. Leased another EV same day and sold the Leaf the next day.

That’s awesome. So did you tell Carmax you already had an online offer or did you show them the online offer code and they ended up giving more than their online offer after the inspection?

I was very surprised. I gave them the online offer code and they offered more after the inspection!

Well, That is unheard of! Congrats!!

And I have no explanation for that other than they are collecting as many cars as possible to become a monopoly (?). I am not sure they know what they are doing because they have to mark their cars basically the same or even above new models.

CarMax offered 21.3 k for my 2018 RAV4 LE FWD. It is 7k above my RV.

VROOM and Carvana offers were 19-20k ish.

I might just keep the car though as I hated not owning my car.

My honda offer from carmax is the highest out of any place. They are offering $26,000. My buyout is 21500. Over $4k in equity now. Think I’m going to bring it in as soon as I crunch some new lease numbers.

That’s what I’m talking about, seemless transaction!!! I can’t deal with carvana or vroom where you have to go back and forth for days and weeks with customer service and phone calls and emails. I have been reading the forums on here. Having the ability to bring it in to carmax and have them view the car and sign off on a check right then and there is how it should be done.

Carmax just declined to give me an online appraisal for my car.

I could go into a local store to get an offer, though.

If it’s close I would definitely drive over.

What was the reason for them declining the online appraisal?

I don’t have the message exactly as presented, but basically it said that there was insufficient recent sales data to generate an instant appraisal, but they’d be happy to make me a shitty offer at my local Carmax.

I got an offer from one of the other usual suspects and it was about $20k under payoff, so I don’t think my local Carmax has any magic up their sleeve. :mage:

So the vehicle isn’t a popular driven one or one that carmax hasn’t had to many trade in to verify an accurate quote online.

And 20k under on the other? Whew
