Thank you for that info. You are indeed correct, statement payoff already had 5k applied while online IFS showed actual amount.
Regardless, if anyone needs a data point, carmax offered 5k more than vroom and carvana for '18 qx60 with 29k miles.
I get a feeling that Carmax is trying to muscle Carvana/Vroom out of the used car market.
I think thatās very unlikely - CarMax has a market cap of $21 Billion right now while Carvana is valued at over $47 Billion. CarMax might be trying to grow revenues/increase market share, but they surely know they cant squeeze out a company 2x+ more valuable.
They are the giants of used car market and Carvana has been pulling cars away from them. So yeah, Carmax is trying to fight back by overbidding them.
Not sure what market cap has to do with anything about what CarMax is doing.
Market cap is important because a corporate competitive strategy would be for a larger company to squeeze out a smaller company, not vice versa.
Just drove 60 miles to carmax (and wegmans!) Frederick MD. Offered me 26k for a 2020 kona ev ultimate. Vroom are at 33k and carvana 33.6k. But worth it for the bakery and deli!
You gave up 7-10K to go to Wegmans?
Obviously I didnāt sell them the car. They couldnāt do an online appraisal.
Oh sorry misunderstood haha. Good!
Im glad i only have to drive five mins in either direction to get to Wegmans lol
My nearest wholefoods is half an hours away.
does it matter what carmax you go to?

Sold a 2012 Chevy Traverse LT with 140,000 miles to CarMax for $4900. They were extremely busy and after the test drive took 2 hours to process everything, but nonetheless it was all done in one day. I had brought an online quote from their website and they were able to match it after their inspection.
Give me the VIN: $4000
Vroom: $4400
Carvana: $4200
Algo: $4700
Sold my 2018 Pacifica Touring L (with DVD) with 16k miles for $26,200.
Checked over a 10 day period and offers bounced between $21-24k with Carvana being next highest at $24,325.
Drove 1:45 from Brooklyn, NY to East Haven, CT and took a Lyft back for $100.
Car had a few dings and scratches which the appraiser noted on the report but did not deduct from the online offer.
Sold my 2018 Honda Clarity Plug in Hybrid with 24,200 miles to Carmax. Carvana was offering me 18,700, didnāt check Honda, Vroom was offering me 16,500, and Carmax offered me 19,000. My payoff was 16700. So I netted about $2300 in positive equity. I was surprised my quote wasnāt adjusted. I had done a number on my wheels, incurring some really nasty scratches, there was a vehicle incident in the carfax history (accidentally hit something - yes Iām a horrible driver lol), and your normal wear and tear on the paint. I honestly would have gone for the Carvana offer if I hadnāt checked on here about how Carmax was offering some sweet offers on Hondas (the only reason I read this Carmax post was because Carvana was pissing me off for not being able to get a hold of a human salesperson). Overall the process with Carmax was incredibly easy, went in, got the car checked, and I signed over the vehicle finally receiving my overpayment check. I could have probably sold it for more but I didnāt want to go through that hassle (plus I saw that people were selling this car for max $20k with a lot less mileage than mine some Iām surprised I got close to that number). I live in the OC (Socal).
You mean the Disposition fee, yeah youāre not getting that back.
So does anyone know from prior experience, if I save a carmax online offer for a specific VIN, will the price continue to fluctuate until I bring the car in for the inspection or is that price locked and itās not worth the effort to keep checking to see if the price goes up and then resave a different quote. I know with Carvana the offer price will continue to move and you can resave the offer to take advantage of the increase but not sure if itās the same with Carmaxās online appraisal.
AFAIK it keeps fluctuating my price has been going up and down even though ive been using my vin and i have not brought it in for inspection yet
Thereās an option to save the offer and thatās what I did. I am curious if you save your offers and if by doing that it locks in the price for that VIN until the expiration date of that offer.
