I think I stole another one lol! Last summer it was the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S which I’m still very much enjoying, but I wanted a 3rd BEV (my wife has a BMW iX 50) as a winter beater—economy longterm airport parking car—city/town car.
Most of us know that the FIAT 500e does not stand out in any particular BEV criteria, other than being emasculating, small, sh!ty range, and slower than a 97yr old Italian Nonna traversing the Italian Dolomites in mid-August, but knowing this going in, and having realistic expectations, it’s actually been surprisingly good (thus far)…and let’s not forget, it’s $17/mo with tax!
Now, this deal was not negotiated at my local FIAT dealer. I began my casual search right before the Holidays, but then lost interest with relatively local dealers blowing me off. I resumed my search a few weeks ago and found a dealer in VA who was willing to play. They had 2 on the lot rotting (other one has since sold).
Long and short, yesterday I flew down from PA to NC (good ol’Frontier Airlines 1-way for $28 bucks!), rented a car to drive 1.5hrs up to the dealer in VA, spent less than an hour at the dealer, and then immediately drove the Spicy Meatball straight back close to 10hrs north to PA 400+ miles (and it felt like I made 400+ charging stops). I actually made 5 charging stops which was overkill, but bc of the limited range (141 miles in perfect conditions) and the winter cold, I didn’t want to chance it. The car performed flawlessly (albeit with a few annoying interior fit/finish rattles curtesy of Torino, Italy), as did all but the last charging stop which was only pulling an agonizingly slow 28kW. Nevertheless, the Cannoli made it home and just needs a good wash and protectant, applied by hand once it warms up here in PA. 25% tint is going on later this week.
Arrivederci my fellow Hackers!
