You had a broker tell you that “the fees stay taxed, otherwise you need to pay me a fee”?

Literally just like that (understood that I’m paraphrasing)?

On the one hand, who cares if the price and overall deal is something that makes everyone happy, but what a backwards way to bake in profit.

On the other hand, customers hate letting people make money, so I get it, people love to determine what our time is worth based on their own arbitrary opinions.

Not like that exactly. In the calculator they were pushing to put dealer cash under taxed incentives, but if i liked the deal i did sign.

I think we wind back to the transparency argument. A great deal is a great deal, but the rules here state that all buyers should be fully aware of the fees they pay their brokers. I don’t see the benefit of advertising no fee and then being sneaky about grabbing your fee.

Couldn’t agree more. You guys work incredibly hard and deserve to be paid well for that work.

I don’t care how much broker is making on this deal as long as the payment works for me.

Not to mention we push on this site to know exactly how to calculate a deal, how to use the calculator, etc. When I look at broker deals, I adjust the taxes and rebates to how they apply to me, and how they are taxed in my state. Idc how much of a kickback is received from the dealer, collect 5k for all I care, but don’t do it by convincing the customer they are wrong or force to structure a BS way. Yes, as long as the deal matches what you were quoted, great. Still not transparent.

It’s like advertising a discount without disclosing a marked up MF, which is required to disclose when advertising here.

If I were a GM, I wouldn’t read all that and just forward it to a random sales person to take care of the individual. I assume most would be like me.

I’ve used this template or something similar on multiple leases over a decade and received a 100% response rate from the recipient. The only exception is when my email ended up in spam instead of their inbox.

How can you tell the difference between the recipient trashing the email vs the email went to their spam?

If I don’t hear back within 6 hours during business hours, I call and confirm receipt. When it’s been in spam, I’ve been on the phone while they searched it. They could certainly be lying.

As soon as they confirm receipt, I say, “great, I look forward to your response.”

Keeping things anonymous, this buyer has confirmed their payment to Acura is $992 less than what they paid the dealer.

If I remember correctly, the last broker caught doing this had his threads frozen until he complied with all the rules. It’s not my place to out this broker, but let’s just say there’s no such thing as a “no broker fee” Acura deal in the NE.

Edit: Actually I think this has more to do with taxes/fees than proving the presence of a broker fee? Interested to hear any comments. That said, the rest of the math definitely did prove a fee was involved.

I live in a state that doesn’t tax rebates.
The state next to be does. And that’s unfortunately where the majority of dealers are in my metro area.

I’ve had more conservations that I can remember trying to convince dealers that since I will register in my state, the rebates are not subject to tax. I’ve even sent them links to their state revenue board that spells this out. And still most of the time their answer is sorry, we have to collect tax.

Let’s face it most dealership employees aren’t exactly Mensa members. They enter numbers in boxes on a screen. Any deviation causes great mental anguish.

That’s frustrating. I’ve had contracts kick back / needing to be signed when tax rate is wrong, you wonder why there aren’t checks in place for taxation on rebates. It’s also silly, bc most DMS/CRMs can account for this pretty easily.

I’m sure there can be checks and a simple Boolean. Is purchase in state or out of state? If out of state tax on rebates = 0. So simple a caveman programmer could do it.

But they just don’t care. Because car dealers are shitty unethical businesses who treat their customers with disdain. Until laws change getting rid of their monopoly on new car sales nothing will change.

And with mega dealerships like Autonation and Lithia gobbling g up sore after store, there’s little to no competition left. It’s an oligopoly with a monopolistic industry.

Most franchise new car stores are on CDK or Reynolds for contracts, both are written by cavemen a long time ago (not joking) and are not flexible or user friendly at all. Also, most dealers would rather not take a leasehackr worthy deal to deal with a possible fund delay (which gives the customer the opening to return the car!). Leasing out of state is a nightmare for most dealers as each state has its own quirks/laws/contract requirements etc. If one simple thing is missed the deal won’t fund and its a disaster.

Until the software giants are de throned (most competitors simply build up their product and sell to CDK in the end) the auto industry is not changing much IMO.

I keep hearing this but I think it’s an excuse for dealers who are kinda lazy.

Maybe my state is the exception but Ive had no issues leasing out of state. Each time the dealer sent the paperwork to the local DMV. I went in and signed some documents, paid my registration fees, DMV sent whatever they needed to the leasing company. Smooth as silk.

I’ve done done in 4 states, each had the same process.

I mean it’s car registration, how much different can it be state to state? You have a car you have a title you have a registration you have a driver you have a leasing company. Only so many permutations of how it can go.

And people move from state to state all the time. Millions of times every year. And somehow it all works.

I think it’s one of these things that people get into their heads. Oh doing this thing is a nightmare so I won’t even bother. When in fact with just a little bit of effort it can be hassle free.

I’m not really talking about registration, i’m talking about the lease funding properly and not creating a situation where the customer gets the opportunity to back out or resign the corrected lease. Imagine as a dealer you have a car that is now 500 miles away, the customer has been driving it for a week and the lease doesn’t fund because you didn’t apply taxes for another state properly (even if its $5 off). The client can now refuse to resign and return the car (probably some penalties but still a big unwind is terrible for a dealer).
