Hit and run on a parked car (NYC life…)

Did you find out if claiming would increase your rates?
@whawhaxd

I was told by the body shop people that this incident will go to collision not comprehensive. One of them also told me that nowadays, especially with Geico (mine), even calling them sometimes makes the rate go up, even without actually filing a claim. Is this possibly true???

That being said, all of them recommended not to go through insurance.

Went to the same area for cameras. Spoke to the Citibank branch manager that said subpoena is needed to start the footage collection process that can take weeks if no one got injured (from his personal experiences). Other stores nearby don’t have any. One residential unit has a camera that might be helpful but no one was there. Wrote a letter and dropped it off at the doorstep asking for help.

I believe you are getting sincere advice not to involve Geico from the shops because they can sometimes make more money by including them. For example, when I had my vehicle repaired, the shop charged my insurance company $400 more than what they would charge if I had paid cash.

Regarding calling, after phoning my insurance company (Progressive) to inquire about what essentially came down to advice, they placed the incident on me as a claim. It shows that I was not at fault (I parked my car and was not inside), but it is still on my record. Unfortunately, filing a complaint with my insurer, and the Department of Insurance did not get it removed. As a result, I am now hesitant to involve them in anything less than five figures or injury-related. You might experience a different outcome, but the quotes you received are very reasonable - if it is quality repair work. Especially with your collision deductible being $750, it would be best to find a reputable shop and pay out of pocket.

Edit: You can always subpoena the Citibank footage and hope it results in identifying who caused the damage. While it takes time, you might get the repair cost back from the offender (or, if they were on the job, their employer/company).

I believe you need to have some type of court case pending before you can get a subpoena issued. So it probably would not be cost effective to do so, especially since there is no way to know if the lawsuit would lead to any recovery at this point.

Went to 5 different body shops this morning.

  1. 650 2 days (225 for the rim and 425 for the body). I really liked the place (young and energetic vibe) but he said he will only need to the HALF of the front bumper and still be able to produce ideal result.

  2. 1800 7-10 days. He said he will have to work on the fender as well as the driver side door to get a perfect color match.

  3. 1500 3-4 days. He said that it’s expensive because he has to take out all the complicated electrical systems including sensors and lane departure things and etc (I was like WTF)

  4. 900 2-3 days for everything.

  5. 525 2 days for everything.

I reached out to #1 if the whole bumper can be painted instead of half.

All of these shops right near Northern blvd?

No, 3 in Williamsburg and 2 in Bushwick.

you try my shop?

In getting quotes for my rear bumper scrape, I was quoted $500 by someone with a solid reputation, great work, and excellent reviews. But I went with the one for $2,000+ because they removed the bumper to check for underlying damage and test the sensors. That was important because I wanted to be sure those safety features were [still] working correctly.

OP. I figured you (and anybody else who parks on the street in NYC’s lovely outer boroughs) would get a kick out of this. Yesterday AM here in the beautiful Bronx, NY, I parallel parked my 2022 4Xe Wrangler into a spot that was occupied previously by a previous generation RAV4. It was a tight fit, but I knew I could get in and I did. The wrangler is easy to park to begin with. The Rear camera and Backup sensors make it that much easier. Next thing I know, there is a guy standing right in front of my driver’s side window. Once my power roof closes I step out and ask “Can I help you?” He tells me that I came really close to hitting his car and that I’d better watch myself when I leave so I don’t “rip his bumper off.” I grab my bags out of my car and tell him “I’ll be sure to take extra care later this afternoon” and walked away. Here’s the car, a 2002 Ford Explorer:

But did the Explorer driver have a young and energetic vibe?

It’s the summer - what could possibly happen in the BX? Fire hydrants fully open on streets without any cap, music blasting out of every window , Mister Softey on the corner and you come back to your 4xe on 4 cinder blocks.

It’s not even funny anymore lol

I meant by young and energetic vibe from the office itself not by the people working there. It was not an appropriate expression on my end.
