Genesis GV80 Coming Soon

Now I’m seeing it… what a horribly designed build tool Genesis has going on.

They offer 4 powertrain options, 2 different ones with the 3.5T AWD; regular and Advanced+.

The Advanced+ has a higher MSRP, so silly me, I assumed that was the highest spec.

If you select the “lower” spec non-advanced+, there are package options that’ll take you higher in MSRP.

your building it wrong,
3.5 advance plus is 7 seater goes to mid to high $60Ks
3.5 with prestige pack on top of advance pack is in mid $70Ks
build the 3rd model instead of last one on the website. and add 900 destination fee it will be the msrp sticker in showrooms

yup, see 1 post up

Correct and those are fair arguments, but two points addressing them:

  1. The Genesis has come out now, not 2 years ago, so its pricing strategy has to contend with the current X5 pricing strategy.
  2. Even when the X5 did first come out, at a price of $77K, after incentives and discounts, you would be looking at around $6-$7K off plus an agressive leasing strategy that saw residuals at around 57-58%. So, even then, the X5 would be a more attractive choice.

So, in regard to the Genesis business model, it absolutely punches above its weight if it was priced as it was meant to, maxing out at upper 60s, which is where a lightly optioned X5 would sit.

My only point in this thread is that the marked up pricing is defeating the biggest proposed selling point of Genesis as a brand: value-based luxury.

I don’t totally agree with either of these.

The genesis right now has supply and demand on its side. There’s no supply yet and some amount of pent up demand, so no incentives and marked up sales prices are the name of the game. The X5’s existence in the world, at this moment in time, is pretty much irrelevant. Now, when supply of the GV80 normalizes, incentives/discounts will start to paint a different picture and then we’ll actually be able to compare.

I seem to recall when the new X5 came out, at least for a short period of time, the idea of getting 6-7k off was ludicrous. It sorted itself out quickly, sure, but there was still a period of time when people that wanted to be the first on the block were paying a premium and discounts weren’t standard.

Ultimately, Genesis dealers likely have been watching what’s been going on with the Palisade and the Telluride like a hawk and know that they’ll be able to milk mark ups for a while. Those both punched much higher than their weight class though, so there was a better value proposition. I agree that the value proposition isn’t here as much, at least on the super loaded model. Step down to the a lower trim level/spec unit, however, and that conversation changes.

Maybe Genesis doesn’t want to be a value based alternative, they just want to be an alternative period to these “super discounted” BMW that seems to be everywhere…

And Hyundai Auto group definitely has deep pockets to experiment and see how market reacts

I won’t argue there’s not pent up demand for this, but we’ll obviously have to wait and see how much demand and the premium that group is willing to pay.

One of the few indicators we can see now is from the small group of potential buyers active in forums. If you head over the Genesis forums, you’ll see some of the most active members throughout the year waiting for this have purchased either an X5 40i or a GLE based on the delays and the launch markups.

Again, that’s a very small market size, so we’ll see what happens.

In regard to the Palisade and Telluride, those have fared well with markups because they are legitimately better than their rivals at almost everything. That’s not the case with the Genesis based on reviews I’ve seen/read.

Finally, one the lower trim value models, I’d personally just rather grab a loaded Telluride or a Palisade because you’re not really giving up much brand image the way you would going from Mercedes to Genesis.

After this first wave of hyped up pricing, if the GV80 settles into a 10% -ish discount plus decent lease deals, I think it’ll be very successful. It’s a great vehicle with an amazing interior.

Mine was an Alfa/Fiat place. But you are right, depends on the dealer.

Yah, I don’t see the pent up demand lasting that long, but for the first one out of the gate, I totally get the marked up price. It’ll be interesting to see how things progress with pricing to hopefully use as a template for watching the GV70. That’s a vehicle I’m much more interested in than this.

Where did this number come from?

From bmw’s build site? I built one on there a little bit ago around that price.

Mercedes most definitely does not for maintenance (unless you specifically purchase a pre-pad maintenance package). Audi also does not (unless you purchase AudiCare).

When I had an MB, they used to be VERY generous w/ loaners and then basically stopped giving them out unless your work was going to take more than 1-2d (and even then, they could “run out” of loaners, if you didn’t reserve one ahead of time).

It’s what was posted by @mllcb42 as a comparably priced X5, which I believe is pretty fair.

my second one landed…
I’ll put Timer on this one too!

Back when I had my Genesis, it was the same as owning any other car in the Hyundai lineup. Zero difference. Maybe that’s changed in the last couple of years, but I highly doubt it. No concierge, no pick-up/drop-off, etc.

I definitely had a love-hate experience with mine. Loved the ridiculously low payment for entry-level luxury, but the customer experience was awful since Hyundai never effectively did anything to differentiate service or expectations between the brands. The new cars look really nice, though. I hope they’ve figured out all the electrical issues.

Oh I see the context now. I’m rather surprised a Genesis at 66k sticker is equipped the same as a $77k X5. I would have thought the delta would be greater.

It’s tough to say. The genesis website is pretty crappy for actually diving in to what the packages get you and stuff like “quality of interior materials” is tough to quantify.

Jesus people are rich and stupid.
