I don’t think they are allowed to do that until they try to trick you at least once Selling cars 101
I emailed this dealer a little while ago asking for a 3 year lease on a Bolt Premier for $1k one pay. I thought it was completely reasonable based on what I’ve read here, and was told 'no, that is impossible, if you find one, tell me, I’ll buy it! Drove by the dealer and there was a Lambo parked out front, and now there’s a GT3 out there. Obviously the dealer is making a ton of money, I have no idea why they couldn’t do the deal.
*Not a true story.
How far off on the monthly were they? It sounds like they met your offer… or are you saying that because the offer wasn’t pre incentive that your target monthly wasn’t reached?
$3500 in incentives on 36 month lease. So off by $97.22 per month.
Ah, so they made an ambiguous counter offer.
I had a dealer try to pull this on me with my palisade deal… got there and they tried to change the numbers. Tried to play a games, so I pulled out printed copies of the email exchange where they agreed to my numbers. Then they came back and tried to up the price because they used the wrong tax rate, so I pulled out the breakdown again where I had specified the tax rate and tax amount.

Local Hyundai dealer quotes me lease deal with sell price at MSRP then tells me their prices are set by corporate and are set low because they move a lot of cars.
I call him out and tell him he’s literally providing no discount and quoting me at MSRP. He gets me off the phone saying he’s going to talk to his manager. Calls back and tells me the car is no longer on the lot. Oops he messed up.
Same guy, I asked him if I can get partner pricing. Nissan has it for XXXXX company (i work for) provides VPP.
“Well you know, Nissan is desperate to sell cars, you know their CEO got arrested! Theyre a few months away from bankrupcy you know”…
Me: “ok so do you have partner/employee pricing?”
Him: (Changes subject)
“the dollar is constantly deprecating”
Seriously. Every time I open my wallet, the dollar looks at me in total disgust. It is humiliating.
Is alexander hamilton looking at you like he looked at the banks
I checked availability on a car at a dealer yesterday, and got the below message back, which I thought was pretty funny/aggressive. The best part is that the car i inquired about wasn’t there anymore and it took her three more messages to admit that.
Hi - - - - - . This is - - - - - from - - - - - Cadillac. I have just sent you a message with the breakdown and details of your brand new Escalade ESV . I would love to invite you over to pick up your keys today. Would 5:00. 5:30 or 6:30 work for you?
This one is a savage exchange I had when looking for a RR. (P.S. all of his “contacts” he claims he made were automated e-mails from the dealer).
SP: Just wanted to keep in touch. I hope everything is well? My contact information is listed below if you need anything.
Me: ----, my multiple inquiries with your store (from May) have gone unanswered. Nevertheless, I will extend the courtesy that neither you nor your staff have extended to me, by actually responding to you. There is no chance that I would ever try to work with your dealership. Please remove me from your list.
SP: That is furthest from the truth, Our internet department contact you 3/31/20 in which you instructed her to not call, only use email, in compliance with your request, I contacted you on 4/27/20 at 2:46 pm, no response to email, I tried again 5/11/20 at 3:07 pm, No response, 5/14/20 11:12 am , no response 5/19/20 at 5:37 pm, in which you did not respond therefore I marked your “lead” as bad therefore you did not get any more response, You have put in 4 inquires from 3/31/20 to 5/19/20 in which all where answered, everything is recorded and time stamped.
Me: I can play that game. Let’s look at those “responses”, shall we? I don’t consider generic, often times automated, e-mails to online inquiries a response. When I submit the inquiry for a specific make and model in your inventory with details as to how I would like a quote, most rational dealers respond with an actual quote. In fact, your generic e-mail actually says “I will follow up with you soon”
So rather than apologize to what could have been a potential customer you dropped the ball on, you attempt to defend yourself and turn it back on me. That’s a great strategy.
SP: If you responded accordingly I could have answered your questions. But you did not.
Me: Responded accordingly to “I will be following up with you soon”. Are you joking? I do not have the time or the patience to be going back and forth with you as I am finding myself doing right now. But do yourself a favor and brush up on your customer service skills. To this date, after numerous inquiries, you have not provided a quote for the vehicle I was interested in. The most you have done is made accusations against me as the reason for why you have not done your job. CCing your Managers on this.
SP: Let me know if you need their email address I’ll send them over to you
Sounds like that sales person dodged a bullet.
Hah, that’s funny. Asking someone to do their job is too much in the auto biz I guess.
Not that anyone would be able to convince you that you are wrong in this, but some things to consider. Salespeople rarely have control over automated messages. Automated message are often worded as if coming from a sales person without their knowledge and content is created by marketing department not the sales person. The only time they see emails are in whatever CRM is being used, and even then, sometimes there are “de-cluttering” rules so they don’t see automated communications. The automated messages are setup to not waste time on manually dealing with with every email that comes in as most of them will wind up being dead leads.
You didn’t respond to automated messages, called the guy irrational, got all huffy after they guy responded, accused him of dropping the ball and having poor customer service skills. While not having the time to respond to automated messages, you clearly have the time to start arguments over nothing with someone who’s trying to do their job. And then you proceed to tell him that he’s making accusations?? Pot meet kettle.
IMHO @wam22 is right in his assessment, the salesman dodged a bullet and god have mercy on the dealership that has to deal with you.
Why not just pick up a random salesperson that appeals to you from “Meet the Staff” on the dealer’s site and contact them directly instead? You can even check that salesperson’s reviews on dealerrater, for peace of mind.
You deserve a round of applause. However, if you bothered to read (or comprehend) the context of what I sent, you would know my problem wasn’t with automated messages. I waited for him to follow up with me and he didn’t, but yet they still sent me numerous generic solicitations. If your store is equipped to take inquiries but not actually respond to them, then that’s a you problem. I merely told him that after numerous attempts, I no longer wanted to work with them. He didn’t respond graciously as a salesperson should* be trained to do. Instead he accused me of somehow not responding to their generic e-mails.
IMHO, your opinion means diddly squat to me. The thread is Funniest/most ridiculous dealer replies.
Their process isn’t perfect, but your only reply to them (even if it was an automated message) was rude and ironic given the fact that you are calling them out for not responding, when you have in fact never responded. You went looking for trouble and found it.
