EV Discussion Thread

You give the average person far too much credit.

From a pure libertarian perspective, I understand the idealistic desire for an even playing field to maximize competitiveness.

But what about competition against other countries? Any concern about America just losing the auto industry completely? In China and the EU they are fully committed to EVs, and are subsidizing their manufacturers to help give them a leg up. If the US fails to do this we will fall behind both domestically and internationally. If the auto industry fails, not only will hundreds of thousands of good manufacturing jobs go away, it would also reduce our GDP if we don’t have competitive cars to export!! Can you imagine a positive scenario where a 10 year subsidy of the EV industry could have a positive ROI in 10-15 years?

Solar was the backbone in California for EVs to make sense. This article from the LA Times (in another source so no LAT paywall) will blow your mind.

It is a must read from start to finish. Really.

We just have to put some fancy computers near the solar farms.

The $7,500 handout is not the way to build a competitive edge over other countries. Invest in infrastructure, technology development so that consumers actually want the product; so that the product is affordable without a taxpayer subsidy on each purchase.

It is not a handout, but rather $7,500 of my federal taxes already paid.

As an EV buyer I am subsidizing myself.

So we can have another Solyndra, eh?

Can you help me understand why the math is different? I honestly don’t see a economic difference between incentivizing consumers vs subsiding manufacturers. Isn’t the end result identical?

We already have another Solyndra, it is the $103,000 loss per car Rivian circus.

Is it? What’s the US EV market share versus China? Would be interesting to know how much the US has spent on consumer rebates vs the same for China.

@moodyhank any insight on this?

Inventory has drastically shrunk as well. Is this their exit strategy to rebrand and retool their ev plans.

They are getting rid of the “z” brand, incorporating autonomous assisted factories, mega castings, bigger packs, faster architecture, and a new battery factory in the states.

So what’s the cheapest EV lease before they quadruple?

I’m liking the Prologue. Wife wants a Q4/Q6. I’d get a Buzz but those seem like they will never lease cheap.

Somone say cheap ev?

The Polestar 3 looks pretty awesome and the deals look good. I’d take one of those over a iD4 or Kia/Hyundai any day of the week.

Sorry for my part in taking us off-track. Got an actual EV question.

Yesterday I parked next to a Jaguar I-Pace. Thought it was a good looking car and I don’t know much about them. Some searching shows me used prices in the low $20k range, which seems crazy as that is where high-trim Chevy Bolts EUVs are hanging out also.

Anyone have any ownership experience with the I-Pace?

None, because I’m too afraid of how much everything ‘Jag’ will cost me.
I would assume a Jag shop charges more per hour than a GM shop

My SIRIUSXM trial ended on my Ioniq 5 and just subscribed for $4/mo tax included, can use it on the app too-thought it was a no brainer price :call_me_hand: I have never subscribed before on any of my vehicles, hope it’s easy to cancel-when cancel comes haha
