EV Discussion Thread

Here’s the thing. China has put their chips on EV. Even if you don’t believe in EV, do you really think it’s wise for our govt to surrender EV tech to china instead of hedging our domestic ev to at least compete with them.

Personally, I have no problem buying a chinese ev. IMHO, it’s no different than buying german or japanese ICE.

That depends on marketing, and whether they can undo the years of ad campaigns they have run on joe 6 pack about the negatives of EVs.

The power of ad influence is immense in this day age. As someone else pointed out, just one story can be so far from the truth, still gets pushed out to the masses, and no retraction/update or fact checking is ever done.

Some opinions from Sandy Munro of lean designs

I’m not sure what a $7,500 govt handout that on face value goes to the consumer so that the auto manufacturer can sell an otherwise undesirable EV has to do with surrendering the tech to China. If the US wants to assist in R&D to be competitive with adversaries like China, then fine. I am simply against handing out money on an individual basis to appease the tree hugging overlords, and defacto benefiting the multi billion dollar companies the lefties seem to generally hate.

Right. But are you going to address the mass extinction events… or are we pretending mass extinction doesn’t happen because we are using fossil fuels to pollute the environment?

Seriously, I’m just not sure where this line of thinking is going. It doesn’t matter if it’s humanity’s fault for climate change or not, only that we are dealing with the fallout and consequences with existing on this single planet.

Ultimately my point is, we should do what’s best for the environment regardless of how we got here.

Would imposing stricter limits change your mind?

Income cap, no loopholes, and companies wont be able to increase prices to capture the credit.

No. Let the product sell on its own merits just like everything else. If the demand is high, great. If the demand is low, then let the businesses adjust accordingly. The gov’t doesn’t need to come to the rescue when it comes to consumer purchasing.

Like I said before, if the government wants to help subsidize in R&D to make the product more desirable so that they can sell without individual subsidies, I support that aspect of it.

There will always be winners and losers. If the government directly subsidizes private R&D the money spent on losers will be taxpayer losses. See Solyndra for example.

If the government gives consumers vouchers and the consumers pick the winners and losers, then the losers are private losses. At least in theory, if capitalism works.

You have lived in Europe too long. You couldn’t convince 40% of the country that we need to take action even if we had a 1952 London smog event that killed 10k people.

The mistake was not going harder on driving the infrastructure and charging by the government.

Driving an EV is a great experience. I’ll probably always have one as one of my cars.

And until I can drive long distances with a reliable, low cost charging network I’ll also have one with a gas tank.

Honestly shocked that many of the gas retailers haven’t put fast chargers in to get people inside to pay for high margin items while they wait… but it’s chicken or egg with charging demand and chargers.

It is happening with the major national truck stop chains. Look at Buc-ee’s, Love’s, and Pilot Flying J for example. Much better places to visit while you charge than the typical gas station with attached convenience store.

Right but currently the govt does both.

So, subsidizing the product manufacturer with, say $7500.00 per vehicle for “R&D” is different than giving me a $7500.00 credit toward purchase? It’s the same thing. Either way, the manufacture is getting the benefit of the $7500.00.

Are you suggesting that the current EV consumer rebate is in lieu of R&D?

imo, consumers and companies both now know there is some amount of money that will be earmarked for evs, and they both want a piece of the pie.

So it happened before in 1895? Huh. Musta been those SUV of the 1890s.

By the way I thought the oceans were boiling due to SUVs. Now they’re freezing. It’s very confusing.

19th century SUV baby!

Please point out said “massive state incentives for EVs” in CA when you have a moment.

Don’t forget about those $500-600 California utility rebates that will really move the needle!
