Deal Check: 2024 BMW M4 Comp. Xdrive

M4s are way more plentiful out there in the market and deals can be much easier had…so yeah who knows how much worse…and at some point BMW could really bump M3 supply and change that situation too!

Are M3s selling for MSRP? Just curious.

Yes they are

Not for knowing, but the M3 and the M5 have always been the original and iconic BMW M cars, IMO.

The 911 will depreciate FAR less over three years than an M4. The M4 is artificially holding its value due to the COVID issues, but used ones have already been dropping steadily. 911s have always depreciated quite slowly, and even though they will depreciate faster over the next three years than from 2020-2023, if you buy or option a tastefully spec’d one, I guarantee that the TCO will be lower than the lease cost of the M4 over three years.

Sure but the M4 now is really what M3 used to be (coupe, even tho there were intermittently M3 sedans)…the 3 is just solely 4 doors now.

I 100% agree, but now we’re operating under the assumption OP or anyone can float ownersip of a 911 for 3 years.

I mean, this has been true for almost any desirable and rare car. If you buy a GT3 for MSRP today and sell it in 3 years, your TCO will very likely be less than M4, but you’d still have to be able to afford a GT3 for that to work.

I wonder when/if 911’s return to ‘normal’ tho…because I spec’ed and ordered one in 2020 for 8% off MSRP…it can’t be impossible for that to happen again can it?

Evidently there is an endless supply of people who can afford 911’s even in this high interest environment.

Buying a GT3 at MSRP is impossible right now so it’s irrelevant. Anyway, I was just responding to OP’s question. When did LH change to only allow for a tight and narrow discussion about the exact specifics of the original post? There are plenty of relevant tangential conversations in these posts and suggesting that $1400/month for an M4 is terrible value is not going off topic at all

I expected the tangents, and there’s nothing wrong with it, but I learned several months ago that this is pointless, I tried several times to convince people to not lease X1’s when the new ones came out and it was a horrible, disgusting, value proposition, but at the end of the day that’s what those people wanted. I advised this against my own business interests, but at the end of the day people want what they want.

We see some really egregious examples here like 40k to lease a 50k vehicle, and that should be stopped just on basic math but if OP wants an M4, then it’s really just about helping find which method of purchase makes the most sense, and none of us have a crystal ball into the true value at the end of a 3 year period.

I agree 100% with this but the Landfill Crew seems to always want to see it differently.

Can you share dealer info? I’m hoping to get the same deal in 10 years when I can afford one. (I am being sarcastic, in case it was not obvious)

How much does a base 911 cost nowadays? $110k? Can you even get one at MSRP and without having to wait 1 or 2 years?

I mean honestly here is my problem with this.

We start at “oh no you shouldn’t lease the M4 it doesn’t make sense it’s a bad value proposition on a lease”

So now we say, “Okay, well I want the M4, so how should I look at buying this car, is a balloon better, just straight finance?”

To now: “Well I mean you shouldn’t even buy an M4 because you can get a 911 for a lower total cost of ownership”

Where does it end??? Everyone who wants an M4 should just get a 911 because the TCO is lower? I mean seriously. Are people allowed to own M4’s at all by this place’s standards? Is there any circumstance under which M4 ownership is acceptable, because it sounds like the answer is no based on what I am reading here.

No. Kia Rio or nothing.

A dealer near me has a decently optioned 2024 911 for around $142k. That’s a $50k difference compared to the M4 OP was looking at.

@barmes80 - Go test drive the M4 and a 911 (if you can find one on a dealer’s lot). Go with the car that will put a smile on your face.

On a judiciously bought 911, the TCO (purchase price + tax + finance cost less resale value after 3 years) should be less than the total cost of your M4 lease.

Is there literally anyone on earth who would rather have an M4 over a 911, and for more money spent?

If they exist, they can finance or balloon it.

If an M4 being worth 50k lease cost is the hill you want to die on, maybe r/askcarsales is for you.

That does bring me back to my other question: is BMW Select/a balloon loan the way to go with these?
