I don’t know whether you have ever been on the receiving end of a vexing vandalism act or total injustice on the road with your family in the car with the Police doing nothing when you hand them over a license plate.
I have and I will gladly spend the money to have additional recourses should something occur unfortunately. If not, I forget about the expense and the presence of the dash cams.
The average Joe is exactly who would benefit from having a dash cam. A mediocre one is better than none. The best is ideal.
People would behave themselves better if they knew everyone has a video of their actions.
As for the deductible I quoted you on: wouldn’t it be nice to not be declared at fault or 50% at fault or simply not waste time or not increasing premiums (incident classified as collision not comprehensive)…
Where I come from (Ukraine), every other person has the dash cam. We have so much shit on the roads back there. Not a big difference here. I agree with @Accelerate, if everyone knew they’re being recorded, they’d behave differently. Dash cam is a must have for sure. Well worth $100-400. Self install only though
Out of curiosity, have any of you that have a dash cam found yourselves in a situation where something happened and your own dash cam showed you were at fault? In other words, we know the benefit but has it ever bitten you?
I’ve read a couple of stories and cases of individuals trying to delete data off their camera in those cases and being charged with obstruction.
This is a very important point no one mentioned (and I didn’t bother either), if money is important, consider even delaying the purchase a bit to save up and get the best possible image quality possible.
And install it yourself. There is no shortage of information to do it and save yourself the additional install cost or even having someone come to your home, you going somewhere, having anyone near your car and not care enough about it etc.
I haven’t but know people who have. Speeding is the most common infraction.
Destroying evidence and obstruction are a whole difference conversation. Consult with an attorney before doing anything like that (look and pick one and have him/ her in your contacts before you ever need one).
But yes it is possible to just wipe the microSD card (I would physically destroy it since some data may be recoverable with forensics if the prosecutor wants to throw money at it).
That day is pretty much here. Cops do it 24/7 in many departments and with the proliferation of smart phone video cameras everything gets recorded within seconds if it’s interesting.
My car came with front and rear mounted cameras as well as cameras mounted to both sides. Pretty soon the manufacturers will just write a software program and give it a memory card slot to allow you record whatever you want while you drive or even while the car is sitting unused. There’s absolutely no reason they couldn’t do this tomorrow for almost zero cost
If you get into a serious accident they are probably going to subpoena your vehicle data recorder anyway. That thing has enough data they don’t really need video
Dash cam has already come in handy twice for 2 minor accidents (one for a car in front of me got sideswipped by someone running a red light, one for my wife). very clear pictures …
Why are you talking about ROI here? Lmfao. Are you thinking about ROI every time you buy something? Please show your math how your huge trunk of 7 series is a positive ROI. Please show me how your paid off house is a positive ROI. What is your ROI of sitting on this forum? You’d better go make some more money sir
It’s ~$300 on the high end. If you have your house paid off and a 7 series, I am pretty sure you make more than that in 1 single day.
Sorry #rantover I am just genuinely surprised from time to time how cheap people could be.
I have this as well… Just the other day I was driving on the highway and someone from the other vehicle threw out a empty can. I was in between 2 cars so I did not have room to maneuver away. The can bounced around and hit my vehicle. I sped up to the other vehicle to make sure I could capture his plate on video in case there was any damage. Luckily there was none.
There are non-injury/death-related outcomes worse than losing your deductible, such as your premiums going up significantly and/or your insurer just dropping you altogether, which can be mitigated by dashcams. Even with injury and death, how is establishing liability not important? Dashcams are relatively new to the US but they proliferated because of insurance-related reasons in Russia and elsewhere.
Like I alluded to earlier, the nationwide data averaging a magnitude of rural, exurban and suburban miles alongside a relatively small number of urban miles is not relevant to me personally and I have no interest in playing your strawman game of calculating an ROI for the average person.
If your mission is to convince the average person that they have no statistical need for a dashcam, go for it.
I use this one on all my three cars and recently installed two for a friend.
Installation is a breeze by hiding wires and running them through the trim to the cigar jack.
Has an internal battery that turns dash cam on when shock is detected so technically does not run when car is off but automatically starts recording when something hits my car.
I would recommend a 64gb High Endurance SD card when using this…
