Boat Purchase Hacking?

Looking to buy a new boat. I’ve owned a few boats over the years but never bought new.

Looking to pay in the $50-60K range, nothing too fancy.

What’s the general discount off listed MSRP one can expect to get? I know it will vary by all sorts of factors. If I see one advertized at say $68K and offer $55K will I get laughed out of the store?

Is there a boat version of LH somewhere out there?

And yes I know the two happiest days of boat ownership.

This should be your reminder about boat ownership…

Following for sure!

Imagine going home and being able to sink into a sea of despair…

What kind of boat are you looking for?

The one that appreciates in value over time so I can give the salesperson 10s

That one sank in 1912.

I would assume this is heavily dependent on brand, dealer inventory, location, etc. You know the drill

You looking for a saltwater or a lake boat?

Best hack involving boats is having a friend who owns one lol. No maintenance of the boat, lift, nor dock. No repair expenses, no towing it around, no gulping of fuel

They sure are fun though. Nothing beats being on the water.

Why do you want to buy one new? I feel like new boats are substantially worse value than new cars

Not sure where you live but have you looked into just doing the boat shares? Seems much better unless you’re going out on it 2-3 times a week…

I’ve thought about getting one as I have very cheap dock spaces at my condo but we just rent them for a couple hundred when we want to go out. Of course I would go more if I owned one but still haven’t decided yet

Lake boat. Bowrider. It’s what I’ve had previously.

Why new? Why not? It’s like why buy a new car vs used? I’ve owned used I want something more modern and a warranty.

I live within walking distance to a marina. It will get used plenty. I’m not one of those people who uses it once or twice a year. Last summer I owned one I was out 25-30 days.

Boats make no sense on paper. This is known. :grinning:

What kind of boat? Around here it’s close to $200 per hour. A basic ski boat is $300-500 for 1/2 a day. Something more high end goes for over $1000 a day.

What kind of bow rider are you looking at specifically? We bought a new Yamaha AR190 in 2019. Got a few thousand off MSRP. If you buy new and take great care of it, it will likely be a very good ownership experience. Buying a used boat is always a gamble, getting one from an owner who babied it and kept all the maintenance records is a must if you go that route.

Be forewarned though, Yamaha and some other manufacturers have had their quality go way downhill since Covid and parts availability for warranty work or repairs can be a real challenge.

The new and used boat market fell off a cliff earlier this year. Tons of inventory. Good luck and be patient for the right one!

Just out of curiosity have you considered an Ariya or maybe a Polestar 2 instead of the boat?

Usually a 26’ sea ray. First few times we used Groupons now the guy rents to us direct since he knows us and we don’t pay all the bogus extra fees. 4 hours is $250 during the week. $350 weekends gas etc included. There’s a lot of competition here so pricing isn’t terrible in Miami for that class of rental. When you get a captain and something larger it can get pricey but even then if we go with a few other families it’s not bad for a day on the water. Certainly cheaper than owning my own. If I knew how to maintain one myself or went more then once or twice a month I would def consider it though.

If docked and not trailered, factor in the high school kid that will dive below every 2 weeks to keep the bottom clean, painting the bottom periodically, and of course paying the dock fees every month. Depending on the location, in SoCal it runs 2-300 on up per month. Worth it in my opinion if you use it one time or more per month. Even if you don’t go out, having dinner or just a few beers hanging out on deck is a lot of fun/never gets old. Good Luck :anchor:

Like I said I think it’s a substantially worse value proposition than a new car, which you use substantially more, will stay in better shape with minimal maintenance and is far more liquid if you want to get rid of it. People on this site are generally about minimizing cost of ownership and for boats that undoubtedly entails buying used and letting the initial sucker eat the massive depreciation. Also just feature and tech wise boats don’t change nearly as quickly as cars, where an 8 yr old boat doesn’t feel nearly as dated as an 8 yr old car for example.

Do what you wish but you are of course lighting tons of dough on fire that you don’t need to. Almost everyone overestimates how much they will use their boat , the maintenance required and how it will maintain value. And tbh if you were someone using it frequently you prob wouldn’t be asking this question on LH

$6k for the summer is the going rate for a slip. No need for kids to dive though, lol. I’ve never had to do that. End of year detailing is about it.

Boats are a horrible thing to own on paper no argument there. It’s like a sports car. Nobody in their right mind should own one.

But yet…
