BMW lease sell to dealer

I have a 2018 M3 6mt that I love dearly. It is a 15k per year lease but due to COVID (not driving to work anymore) I am at 30k miles with 9 months left until turn in. There is some equity in the lease right now likely due to the mileage with the typical dealers (carmax, vroom, etc.). I’ve read that you can’t transfer a lease within 6 months of turn in but does that apply to dealers? If so, it pains me to say but I’d rather get some cash back before March than turn it in with 10k unused. If that restriction doesn’t apply to dealers I can enjoy it more and sell late summer.

You’re confusing lease transfers with just selling your car to a dealer. There’s a big difference.

You can sell your car to a dealer at anytime. The dealer buys it, your lease is paid off and the lease contract is ended.

A lease transfer is when you transfer your lease to another private individual. They take over the remaining payments. This is what you can’t do in the last 6 months of a BMW lease.

In order to end your lease early, you would have someone buyout the lease.

You can have a third party buyout the car. In order to do that, you would call your leasing company and get the current “dealer payoff quote” which is the amount of money needed right now to payoff your car which will satisfy your lease agreement. Once you have that number you can take your car to your local Carmax and see what they would offer to buy your car. If the amount is near or above your dealer payoff quote, then you can sell it to them and you would be out of the lease. Alternatively, you can get an online quote from vroom.com or carvana.com who will give you an instant online offer. If you accept the offer, they would come and pick up the car from you and pay you on the spot. Ideally you would get a quote from all sources as they may vary significantly. We got the VROOM topic going (Sold one to VROOM! - #254 by SunshineOC) but thought I’d throw in how easy it was with Carvana too, and why it’s important to check both. Put the wife’s Lexus data through both Vroom and Carvana, vroom was $2k under the payoff, Carvana was $45 over it. Sold one to VROOM!

Not a lease deal, but I sold my prior lease to Vroom.com today. I rarely plug companies, but holy cow it was easy! I also got a quote from Carvana, which was more than $2K below my payoff – Vroom was $1,600 over my payoff. Huge swing in my favor. Thanks, I’ve sold leased vehicles from other manufacturers early to algo but the lease transfer thing with bmw spooked me. Payment is $780 pretax. It was a custom order at the end of the f80 run, SO speed cloth 6mt 19in wheels (non-comp).
