Hello all
I’m located in NorCal and would love to buy or lease an ionic 6. I just got approved for the California Clean Cars for All program. This is when you retire your old gas guzzler (2007 or older) and they give you 10k to be used towards the purchase or lease of an EV.
It’s great but you are only allowed to buy from dealers who are on a list they have on their website. I’m in Santa Rosa and wanted to buy a ionic 6.
To be honest I have never purchased or leased a new car before. Can someone point me in the right direction that would take advantage of this along with the 7500 “tax break”?
I can’t believe I’m going to have 17k to use for this purchase and I can put another 7-10k into the deal on top of that.
Has anyone else taken advantage of this program?
Can anyone help me get the ball rolling. I won’t get the final award letter for 30 days and that’s when I will be purchasing the car.
I’m looking for an dark colored Ionic 6 or 5. But I’m open to other cars. I enjoy ás much tech as I can get in these cars and hope someone can help me figure all this out.
Thanks so much. I have learned a lot reading through the forum and am looking forward to hearing from anyone and everyone.
Thanks
Sparky
EVs are already getting $10K+ lease incentives. If you’re getting another $10K on top of everything else, that’s awesome. But if this program just substitutes one $10K incentive for another, you’re not getting anything extra and there’s no point.
No this is a state of California program funded through part of the federal infrastructure improvement program (I think it’s that one but if not it’s one of the other recently enacted programs) .
I’m not sure what 10k program you’re referring to do you mean the tax rebate? I thought that was 7500 and this year is given by most dealers at the point of sale
. This program I’m speaking of is an additional benefit. They are trying to get older vehicles off the road and this is an incentive program that gives you the money after you retire the vehicle at a state approved pick and place. Well actually they give it direct to the dealer but it is stackable with other incentives available now. If you are eligible for a state benefit you probably can stack that as well.
I was asking if anyone else in Northern California has taken advantage of it. I want to know which dealer they used. There is a list of dealers that are the only ones you can use for this program.
If anyone reads this who is familiar with the process please reach out to me and share whatever your experience was using it.
They had it last year but it ran out of funds and about a month ago they reopened it with less barriers to entry and more money paid out. They even have a similar program that gives you 7500 to go for an electric bicycle and many accessories for it, again after retiring an older than 2007 vehicle.
Looking forward to hearing your experiences

Don’t you have to be making close to like 300% of poverty line?
Our tax dollars at work!
Are there a lot of Hyundai dealers on the list? Is this similar to Truecar, where you have to log into a website and request a quote or can you just request pricing online?
I would recommend test driving both cars, since they are totally different. I picked up an Ioniq 5 last month on the East Coast. I am not a big fan of the design of the Ioniq 6, but to each their own.
I would strongly suggest doing some research and narrowing down your list of cars to your top 3. I would also suggest taking a look at broker deals in the Marketplace to get an idea of what pricing looks like on some of the cars you might be interested in.
We can help you decipher whether you are getting a good deal on a car, as long as you post the deal here for us to review. As far as the program itself, I have no clue how it works. However, you seemed to have clearly explained it in your post.
I think what they were referring to was the lease incentives currently available for the Ioniq 5. That $10k already includes the $7500 federal EV rebate.
Yes I can see how one would think that but it is in fact a grant given to low income people who are willing to retire their car and buy an EV.
I was going to buy a bolt rub until I drive one. I found driving it to be a less than enjoyable experience. It felt like it was barely"stuck’ to the road. It also road hard and it felt like I was feeling every tiny ripple in the road.
Never mind the bullshit the dealer put me through for four hours.
Anyhow I will reach out to @mevora and take it from there.
Thanks again for everyone’s help and apologies if you feel like your subsidizing my car with your taxes, your not.
Only walk into a dealership to either test drive a car or take delivery of a car. You can do all negotiations via phone or email. I prefer email. So far this technique has worked on my last 3 leases.
What/who is paying for the $10K if not taxpayers?

Thanks for putting it in perspective.@DfG. @gohawks I’m not going to bother educating you about how your taxes are spent. Hint its not on food stamps or electric vehicle subsides.
Happy to help.
Two things you can do is to add $8000 on top of this grant by buying a pre owned.
PGE offers $4000 in grant and you can add $4000 from Federal Tax rebate. This’ll give you further discount.
About car purchase process, it’s pretty straight forward, you’ve to negotiate the price as usual and then present them the voucher ( or confirmation email) & they’ll remove that from the price. In case of PGE/Irs credit this is how I imagine it’ll go
You purchased a car for $20,000 ( Before Tax). They add a 4k federal discount . so the car price is $16000. You present your voucher for 10k, and now you only pay 6k. Then you go to PGE and they’ll give you a 4k rebate check. This way you effectively buy a car for 2k ( + tax and fees on the total price of the car)
This is a no brainer and 20k buys a very good used EV (2019 vintage tesla or similar) with net 2k out of pocket.
@Dfg : Yes it’s great but while I qualify for it, It may make more sense to get a brand new car for sub $300 as offered here in forum. Again depends on personal preference. But you can get certainly get a tesla that’ll last for 5-10 years for almost free
What’s considered low income?
I was going to help my mom with this program but unfortunately her car didn’t have insurance on it the last 2 years as a non op so she didn’t qualify. I ended up buying her a car to lease for 2 years and we’ll revisit it then.
Like it was mentioned grab a pre owned EV and take advantage.
All welfare spending by the federal government totaled $523B in the most recent fiscal year. So yes tax money and lots of it very much does go to food stamps and other forms of govt cheese.
Any chance do you know if SCE has the same program? Might try and do something for my mom on this program if I can figure it all out…
