As a kid, I was obsessed with cars. Matchbox were my patron deity, and I could quote performance numbers chapter and verse for many of the real life counterparts of those little models. And back then, I knew, as did everyone, that Mercedes was the best, and the S-class was the cream of the crop. The car that the most successful people would drive. The one to aspire to, even if your chances of ever getting in one were close to non-existent.
Still, a kid dreams, so I dreamed of owning one some day. I wanted a Ferrari, too, inspired by Magnum PI, but the S-class was the one, the car that would symbolize something special, something quite amazing and unimaginable.
Today, I leased one.
I don’t know if it means quite anywhere near as much as I thought it would as a child, but this 6 year-old, a mere 40 years later, is as giddy as he ever was, about any car.
