Continuing the discussion from Gas price predictions?:
Why do we need to continue that discussion?
I’ll answer that one.
-
Whatever meets your car’s minimum octane rating and no higher
-
B100 Biodiesel (smells like
may void warranty)
-
Definitely not E85 (who wastes energy putting corn in their gas?)
-
Hydrogen (station temporarily out of service)

A $15K fueling card (I assume it’s a card) from Toyota, and I’m sittin’ pretty, buddy.
The most abundant molecule on the periodic table. If the filling infrastructure was reliable I might join you - I short-listed one for last lease until I started checking my local stations, not so reliable.
The best grade is what the manufacturer recommends, and the best gas will be ‘Top Tier’.
I’m happy so long as the pump says 150 kW on it. Let Porsche drivers use up the super high octane 350 kW stuff.
Articles I’ve read say manufacturers may recommend premium but if your car is tuned for mid-grade, it should be fine, though you may sacrifice a little performance boost. Just wondering…
IIRC, this was my circumstance with my MINI Clubman. Premium gas was ‘recommended, but not required’. I ran the N12 normally aspirated, not the turbo, so I used regular unleaded for well over a quarter million miles with no issues.
Some manufacturers like Mazda and Ford provide output figures for both regular and premium fuel on the turbocharged models.
For example, the 2.5T in CX-30, CX-5, CX-50, and CX-9 make 227 hp on regular and 250 hp on premium.
There is the minimum and then the recommended… Always go with the minimum unless you’re motor is specifically tuned to take advantage of the higher octane. I believe most engines are tuned for the minimum grade available. In some cars you’ll lose power, but most people don’t notice anyways.
Just put the minimum required.
Torque was the same tho IIRC.
For the Mazda engines? I thought so, too, but I looked it up just now, and torque goes up by 10 lb-ft. I don’t know what the curves are like but can’t imagine either the inc’d HP or torque would be that noticeable in daily driving.
