What would you buy for $10k?

actually maybe $8k isn’t so bad, I just looked …I see quote a few with sub 100k miles for $10k+

The only other 1900 on CL in my area is 15k (albeit with 30k less miles). Think I might snag it

def go to CL for Miata’s, all the boomers use CL and Cargurus.com now- everything on FB Marketplace is trash, noticed it’s gotten worse since earlier this year

just people flipping junk onto other people, who end up flipping junk to other people etc etc

Do you own a body shop? Otherwise there’s no way you’re coming out ahead if you’re paying retail for all that work.

Just saw it in person. Looks great, the guy selling is loaded and old and is downsizing homes with his wife, so nowhere for the lil miata to rest. I’m really considering buying it

don’t wait too long to decide, if the owner looks like he treated it well that’s worth a lot

Just wondering, what search filters do you use to find a good deal?

wow thats a great price

Had a friend with one of these years ago. Believe it was not type s but was stick. He bought it 4 years old with over 100k miles. Drove it for years and sold for almost price he paid for.

These are great cars.

Well they are hard to find and the definition of a good deal keeps evolving. That being said, depends on your goals and budget.

Some useful parameters IMO: set min miles to 1,000 to weed out people who input 250 for 250,000 miles. Min price $100 or $500 to weed out people who input $1 or drop digits such as putting in $45 instead of $45,000. Click ‘owner’ instead of all or dealer. Browse your local CL quite a few times until you start seeing patterns to get a sense of who the curbstoners and unlicensed dealers are, and learn to avoid them. Search ‘titles only’ when searching for a specific make & model.

1 option is to find a relatively modern car: I can’t recall off the top of my head when traction control/ESP became standard in the 2000s but 2013 or 2014 ish was when bluetooth and rearview cameras began to become mainstream among the Asian brands. So min year 2012 or 2013, set max price to 12k and try to find something like a Subaru Legacy at or below 11k, try to stick to below 125k ish miles. That’s not a hard ceiling; there’s nothing magical about that number. 150 could be your ceiling if you find nothing below 125.

The other option is fully depreciated cars which theoretically can’t go any lower. Min year some time in the 1990s. Mileage is less important at this age than care and maintenance. Look at sub $2k, $2-3k, $3-4k cars. Stick to manuals if you know or can learn to drive one. Aside from some infamous engines, the most critical powertrain component likely to fail first is an automatic transmission. Remember what everyone in this segment is searching for (the usual Japanese brands) so you’ll either need to be the quickest to snatch it up or you’ll need to expand your search. Hardly anybody wants domestics from the 90s and 00s but they weren’t all lemons. Find something that’s been cared for (and was apparently worth keeping for a long time) like the Taurus I posted yesterday and the various senior cars I’ve posted earlier like Mercury Grand Marquis, Buick Lesabre, etc.
