We need a rant thread (to vent our frustration)

That’s not true… Personally - I KNOW that dealers make money on the ignorant. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard friends paid MSRP or over MSRP for a “hot car” but their monthly was GREAT because they put down $6000…

I don’t want dealers making money on me because I know they can make their profit on the next guy. If we were all equal though, then sure, make your little profit on me and everyone else.

@ethanrs what was the largest markup/most money you made on one sale?

Education has nothing to do with it. I know GMs with no education making seven figures and sales people making well into the six figure range. Hell, I went to the University of Chicago for undergrad (took some classes at Yale too) and I am selling cars. There is a career path and money to be made if you are good.

This is the most accurate thing I have ever read.

Best clients for me have been construction / contractors. Usually income in the 60-80k / month range and are genuinely the nicest, most easygoing customers ever. I’ve actually taken discount off in demand cars (which are usually MSRP only) because they treated me so well.

I’ve sold countless cars to people making +500k / month that were hellish to deal with.

This is a gross generalization. I understand the dealership is a business. I have no issue with them making some money if the offer is fair. However If I can get a better deal elsewhere why wouldn’t I? there are plenty of reasonable customers who aren’t morons.

$1 is a terrible tip for someone who does all of the work of a server - but more. Don’t be so cheap.

So many pissed off people around here who finally found a place to rant and vent their frustration with anything :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Another example of a dealer being straight or atleast not trying to sell me the car anyway… This was on Friday.

I think the disconnect is what is a “reasonable profit”. It is $500, $1000, $2000? $1000 or even $3000 might sound like a lot and the dealer is flush with cash, but then the sales person, finance manager, sales manager, GSM, and GM get paid. Then the office/title clerks needs to get paid along with the porters that cleaned/gassed the car. You also have general stuff like paying for the CRM, electric, upkeep, etc. Obviously service helps with that, but I bet the owners and customer “reasonable profit” difference is huge.

That is a fair point and it will vary for everyone. However saying all customers don’t want the dealers to make any profit is an absurd statement.

Yep. I don’t care if a dealer makes $10,000 as long as I get what I want.

As someone who spent years working in the food service industry, in my experience, the take out people do not do anything even remotely close to the work of what the servers do.

People have a horrible misunderstanding of how much work being a server at a busy, high volume restaurant is.

There is a difference between net gross and profit… Taking all the fixed costs out of the equation is where that number becomes confusing. How much should a car salesman make on each car. It’s like the magic question… If it’s a true sales job it should be 100% whatever the salesperson wants but it should be transparent so that the profits and where the numbers come from can be cross shopped.

It was anecdotal of the sales base as a whole. If I asked you to sample all sales people working at car dealership across the US, where do you think they would fall on an educational level?

It’s also twisting the analysis in the wrong direction. The criticism was pointed at the lack of educational standards for how car sales staff are handled. There’s really no regulating bodies or governing bodies that hand out exams and encourage a certain type of standard than needs any type of adherence.

And stating that people in those positions, who are making that type of income, sort of just proves my point? Car dealerships wouldn’t be making that type of money if they weren’t screwing people over in the first place. It’s why this very website even exists. You don’t need to make an absurd profit just to stay in business. But that’s what they are aiming for most of the time. How can we make the most money possible, regardless of the effects it has on the customer making the purchase. The reasoning you are pointing out is why the industry is shitty in the first place. You’re only focused on the money. You only stay in it for the money. When was the last time you saw a car dealership getting an award for altruism?

People are who they are. It’s not correlated with income or wealth.

Agreed. I used to do maybe 10% for takeout, but I’ve been doing 20%+ during this. I’m fortunate enough to be employed with much lower expenses (no gas, tolls, etc) so I may as well spread the wealth

Lol I wouldn’t wish a hospital stay on anyone.
