The route to Escondido wouldn’t be too bad either. Find a way on Metrolink to go to Union Station LA and take it down to Oceanside (Can also use Amtrak but that’s more $). From there, connect with the Sprinter train to Escondido. I’ve used Metrolink more than a few times just to get down to SD Count…
