The Porsche 911 Discussion Thread

Yup. I was searching for one myself and threw in the towel for now. Just not worth it.

Give it some time and the deals will be back…hoping in the next year or so.

Looks like the first 992s sold in the US were 2020 models.

The lead-up to the new 992 generation of the Porsche 911 has been long, but the wait is about to pay off. At our recent firsthand experience with a prototype of the new sports car, we learned that the production model will officially make its debut next month. Porsche also shared the launch cadence for the 911 lineup. In the United States, it will begin in summer 2019, when the first models arrive in dealerships as 2020 models.

Across all cars especially vw brands the tech has made significant improvements in the last 5 years. Sure a 997 would drive great, but I agree the interior would be a disappointment, that’s something I could live with in a track toy, but not something you expect to drive on the street. Would you buy a beater to drive in the winter and do the 911 justice and put summer tires on it?

I agree. I’m not sure that I could personally purchase one with the older interior. Sure, it still looks good… but its just too lackluster (overall) in comparison with the more recent iterations.

I owned a 997S and a 991.1 (slicktop 7MT car), and looking at ordering a 992 S manual. I think the self proclaimed ‘purists’ are just repeating the mantra of how the modern cars drive worse than earlier ones with zero actual first hand experience. Porsche did electric steering right, unlike BMW.

Thank you. I was assuming summer tires all year round.

We have an SUV with AWD that doesn’t get driven much, and that’s my current fallback when my RWD sedan just won’t cut it. I just want to fall back on the SUV less (never would be ideal).

Not expecting much out of a 911 if there’s a lot of snow, or really any ice.

I just want to be able to run nearby errands while there’s some light snow falling, which doesn’t seem like a lot to ask. But I’ve already made this mistake once, so it’s something I’d rather not repeat.

I acknowledge that my expectations may not be realistic.

If I was you I would be buying the 911 as a fun car that you can enjoy when the weather is nice, also summer tires do suck in temps below 40 deg as well which I assume in Columbus starts in October/November until March.

Another thing to keep in mind is Porsche has significantly upped prices in consecutive model years of the 992. So, when shopping for a used one, you’ll get more bang for your buck with an earlier year

In theory yes, but nowadays so many sellers want absurd prices. They want to justify it by thinking the new one costs the higher sticker plus blessings.

yeh it’s ridiculous. I have seen some signs of people accepting reality recently though.

Go buy an Audi or BMW and be done with it. A 911 on all seasons is a sin and I will slash your tires if I can find the car.

Just read this. Let us know what you want your eulogy to be. The first slick piece of road you try going around after it rains or snows on a chilly day might be your last.

A 991.2 or a 992 4S, GTS, and any Targa are going to be your best in terms of limiting depreciation. Turbo and Turbo S are great cars, but they will depreciate like crazy.

FWIW - I’d much rather see him put AS on a 911 versus him getting into an Audi or BMW. :man_shrugging:

Noted on the summer tires. I can keep the car where you can’t find it.

This helps a lot with my original question. Thank you.

I’ve been casually pawing through listings on and off for a matter of several months, and it looks like it’s taking longer to find buyers now (ads seem to be up longer).

I’m not in a rush, and if the market looks like it’s sliding I’m perfectly comfortable sitting back and watching for a while.

Ive left the 911 platform a 9 yrs ago. So im digging back on what I can remember on the 991.1 and 991.2. Ive spent seat time in the 992 GT cars but did not get lured back.

  1. Tech in the 991.1 platform is old. No carplay/nav/ likely only parking sensors and no back up camera…still could have heated and vented seats thought.

  2. If you value an NA engine from the S/GTS the 991.1 platform is a good choice. If you need torque to be exciting then 991.2 and up

  3. Summer tires in winter. Bad in snow/rain, but also not safe in COLD
Even dry cold temperature will be bad. “Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.” Stole this from tirerack for summer tires.

Not sure how often this is for you. But you will take at least 15 minutes of driving to have “traction” on a cold day. If your errand driving is less than 15-20 minute drive, its pointless as you cannot get the tire warm enough to drive it like a porsche should be driven.

  1. All the GT# cars will be very stiff for daily driving, So if you have good smooth roads great, If not be prepared to be jiggled to a disc hernia.

  2. pot holes/ drive way ramps and maybe need for a front lift vs scraping?

  3. If you expect a car with a lot of torque, the non TT/TTS trims probably wont be the right car.
These cars are for more of the long sweeper turns/canyons than highway or traffic light torque monsters.

  4. It seems like a 992 in AWD format would be the safest/car for your stated use, But also the least depreciated, higher TCO.

Thank you for the examples and the richness of detail on your comments. Helps a lot, along with your concluding recommendation.

Not that this is the deciding factor/deal killer, but many people missed the announcement that Porsche back-ported CarPlay support

https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a42568191/porsche-pccm-plus-carplay-head-units-997-987-cayennes/

Not sure how good it works, maybe at least address in-car phone support and navigation.

that white wire is so 2020

It is, but most people won’t pay what I did for a genuine Apple black lightning cable (they space grey keyboard and track pad they came with are :kissing_heart::ok_hand:t2:)

All the cool cars have wireless apple carplay?
