The Porsche 911 Discussion Thread

I’m more than a little bit surprised that the first salesman didn’t have an inkling that the guy was stoned/high and refused to let him drive.

My car was 20 years old but it was also my dream car from 20 years ago lol

Can’t afford to move out of my parents house though…

Ok - so I’ve been driving my 911 a decent amount on trips over the past 2 weeks, I’ve put over 600 miles on it in 2 weeks. Someone asked me why, and my answer is that other than the fact that it drives amazing and is comfortable - it’s also the most fuel efficient car I own!!! This is with getting stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for about 35-40 minutes.

Please also note how little gas I have left and the fact that I still have 79 miles of range at 1/8 of a tank…

I dropped my car off for service this morning at the indie mechanic shop next to their used car showroom, and I sat in this 2020 S Cabriolet while I was there.

I was pleasantly surprised to not find anything carved out of wood - or tusks - and found the interior a lot more modern and inviting than previous older versions I encountered.

Between cylinder deactivation, coast mode and good aerodynamics, Porsche’s get shockingly good fuel economy on the freeway. I often get better than EPA estimates on road trips. Kinda poo-poo around town though, but thats okay.

Do you have the extended range tank?

It does have the extended range tank! I don’t think it has cylinder deactivation though, I think that’s only on the 4.0 engines.

Car is rated for 18/24. I can easily get 27-28 MPG just cruising at 75-80 MPH.

Which one of you traded in your 2005 GT?

I think its on the Cayenne, Panamera and the 718 GTS. No idea why its those specific ones…

I noticed the same on my Panamera. I got an average of 27 MPG going to and from Vegas for a road trip. A nice surprise given the lower EPA estimate.

GT is for peasants. This is what you want:

Almost every mid- and rear-engined Porsche is a thing of beauty, except that ugly boat.

As we all know, some people just don’t get it.

This and the Countach I never liked them.

Most over-rated POS in the history of cars.

I had the 959 on my bedroom wall growing up. Today? CGT and Ruf Yellowbird over the 918 and 959 by a country mile. The 993 GT2’s in with a shout too, though it’s frankly amazing how tame it feels from a modern perspective…

997 GT3 RS 4.0 might just be the daddy. Expecting that to go for CGT money in the not too distant future.

959 was the car that was the vision of what super cars would be in the future.

The 959, the F40 and only a handful of others brought us to where we are now. A pivotal car for the future from the past.

Sure, but it wasn’t actually that great a drive. Strange torque curve as boost built, the early 4wd limites dynamics, etc. Where as the Ruf is a spectacular drive, lag and all- the dynamics are spot on. As an engineering showcase the 959 (and 918) were decades ahead of the competition. But as a driver’s car? Give me the F40 any day (not really, I’m far too tall and the steering knuckle hits my foot, but if I was short).

I have driven an F40 twice and it was great for when and what it was, but I have never driven a 959 although I will take C&D’s word for it: perfect.

To each their own, though if you read the article they found fault with steering feel, etc. I’ve never driven an original spec 959, only the Canapa spec US import with ~600 hp. I prefer the feel and drama of the Ruf Yellow Bird or the precision, chassis and rwd dynamics of 993 GT2 (even if it does feel slow in comparison).

I’d use “close to perfect” for the CGT and 997 GT3 4.0: clear high points for their eras. Both were examples of Porsche engineers removing as much as possible to achieve performance, where the 959, 918 and modern turbos are examples of them adding systems to achieve performance- turbos, 4wd, rear wheel steering, dual clutch transmissions (planned for the 959 but dropped) etc. As a driving experience I’ve found i much prefer the former.
