Hello! I have never leased a Subaru before and trying to figure out how I can get the price down a bit more - I plugged the numbers into the leasehackr calculator and am getting a lower payment, so I’m not sure where I’m going wrong. Would love some advice! I don’t want to put anything down (besides first payment, and willing to pay the fees up front if necessary), and I’d like to be closer to $300/month. Is that possible?
Subaru invoice is around 7%, so you are only getting 4% off. I would target $1,500 under invoice, so you should try for around $2,200 off more.
And check MF on Edmunds.
Thanks so much! Yes, I checked Edmunds and the MF should be .00160 - they originally quoted me a higher monthly price with no breakdown and when I asked for the breakdown, they had the MF at .0021, so I already got that reduced.
I said I wanted the vehicle selling price to be $23000, but was told by the dealer rep that “pricing as I have quoted is $500 over our invoice cost, therefore we do not have anywhere near a $1500 margin to offer that sort of discount.” I’m a bit confused about the invoice price. If they won’t do $23k, would $23,500 still be a good deal? The problem here in Las Vegas is that we only have 1 dealership, so I don’t have any competitors to go to.
It is hard to get an aggressive deal in January. Stick to $22,800 (~$1,000 below invoice) if you can wait.
$23,500 will get you below $300 before tax.

This is what I was looking at with a price of $23,500 if they won’t go to 23k:
I combined the license/title fee and doc prep fee, not sure if that messes anything up.
I got my Subaru Outback 2018 Premium with Eyesight and Power lift package in NorCal. (Signed in Aug 2018) 12k miles/year. $32,xxx msrp --> $26,750 agreed upon sales price.
Got the dealership to go down to 14% off MSRP, I did have more dealerships to go off of at the time. They also went 50/50 with me on 1st month and the dealer fees, registration, doc fees etc. So my DAS was $400. Monthly payment is $275 before taxes.
The Crosstrek is a top seller though, they may not be interested in giving much of a discount, however, I know from my own experience that there is room for discounting.
Edit. Added when I signed for reference, as deals change constantly.
I would be very happy with $306/month and $306 due at signing (I’m assuming that’s what DAS means?). Would you suggest sending that worksheet over and saying that is what I want? I would be willing to work with a dealership in Southern California if that would open up more opportunities.
That sounds like a great deal! Wow. I might have to look at other models if I can’t get where I want to with the Crosstrek. I just like the size and my budget is 24k. I never thought about asking for a dealer split on fees, etc - that’s a very helpful tip, thank you!
Don’t send them anything, just the selling price. Once you get what you want the numbers will align. Or you can tell them $299/mo with $299 due at signing, if you are happy with this number.
Top 3 Subaru models are Ascent, Forester, and Crosstrek; you’d have bigger discount on Outback since it’s due for a makeover in MY 2020.
Crosstrek seems to be hot and Ascent is too new. But I always get $1,500 under invoice on Foresters, even factory ordered. Outback looks like the best lease value now.
The dealer originally wanted to stack all those fees on me, but since they marked up the MF on me a bit I told them I’d want the drive offs discounted or I’ll walk. In the end the dealer still made their take I’m sure, but I got the car I was happy with.
Outback isn’t that bad if you’re open to different models, from a car perspective vs crosstrek, its a bit roomier, but less mpg, same ground clearance, I like the roof rack, and both have the same upgrades available.
That’s good to know. I see they have a 0% financing offer on the Outback now too. I just really wanted to go smaller and keep the purchase price at $24k or less. I just found out the car they were quoting me on isn’t actually in stock and most of the inventory they show on their website in stock is actually in transit and won’t be here until the end of the month, so that’s a bit annoying. I suppose that gives me more time to negotiate.
Check out Forester?
I’m also in the market for one and recently got a quote for $330 with about $500 I believe due at signing which covers the upfront fees. MSRP on the car was just over $29k. I told them I’d like to be around the $300 mark and waiting to see how it’ll play out. This is in the Chicagoland area.
I’m just shocked that anyone would pay $300 a month for a car with a normally aspirated 4cyl putting out 152hp
i have had a local nj subaru dealer’s fleet department hound me for weeks asking me to move some volume for them because I moved a bit for their nissan store. but then i ran these things. i can’t imagine how there could be LH appetite for these cars…
