Silverado RST EV or Lightning Platinum - Real Ownership (Not Online Reviews)

,

Has anyone owned both?

Thoughts on a comparison is pricing if the same?

I haven’t owned either. I think the RST looks better – that’s all I have to contribute (please mark me as the solution :D)

Haven’t owned neither.

Silverado EV if you want range and better looks.

F-150 if you want a more truck-like experience and drive (body on frame).

F-150 has 2200lb payload and Silverado EV has 1500, both tow the same, Silverado EV has the mid-gate.

If none of these are deal breakers for you, get the cheapest you can find.

Just like everyone else I haven’t owned either.

But as a daily EV driver I’ll add my 2 cents: inefficient drivetrains really bother me. I could daily drive a first gen Nissan Leaf and its depleted battery and 45 mile range wouldn’t bother me as much as GM’s inefficient drivetrain.

I can’t respect a bunch of engineers who apparently can’t make a half decent power train as far as efficiency goes. So they half assed it IMO by just stuffing an absolutely ridiculous (not in a good way) 205 kWh battery in there. Imagine charging that at home on L2! Or on a roadtrip where a typical L3 is pushing 100 KW

And the cascading side effects:

The vehicle is now immensely heavier
So the brakes have to be bigger
So the wheels have to be bigger
So the sidewall is smaller, the ride is harsher
And the tires are more expensive
And more prone to flats

I am a huge fan of the lightning and all of the recent Ford products I have owned. However, once the RST popped up for $550/month with first only this AM, I felt like it was worth a conversation. The Lightning Plat is $100 more per month but that includes excise so same-same.

So you’d hate driving an Ariya with 2.8mi/kWh

It makes the 2mi/kWh of the Silverado quite reasonable in comparison.

I’ve got a lariat and sat in a platinum when I was shopping. Both are real nice and I’ve loved mine this past 10 months.

I’d probably go with the stronger deal. Both have perks and both will be far underwater at lease turn in lol.

Exact same pricing which makes it tough!

Air suspension is interesting on the RST
Range is interesting

But I think the ford is a “better” product from my experiences and enjoyment

I have the Sierra EV and I am really happy with it so far. Big range, huge cabin, rear steer makes it really nimble for its size, lots of standard equipment. Since it is a ground up EV, it is decently efficient (averaging 2.5 miles per kwh in nice weather). It is also a unibody vehicle so it drives more like an SUV than a truck.

It does have the stupid glass roof with no shade (thanks Elon) but GM sells one for like $130 as an accessory. 24 inch wheels are also hurting the ride quality over small bumps so I am planning on getting 18s or 20s for my winter setup. With those two annoyances fixed, it is a great EV.

I did also test drive a Lightning and while I thought it was nice, Sierra/Silverado EV twins at the top trim level is a class above in my opinion.

The 24” wheels with low profile tires pretty much negate any benefit of the air suspension.

lol yes

Every EV no doubt

Do you have a want or need for a “truck”? Just curious what the attraction is. I know you’re a car guy and like the big motors. I suppose that is dirt cheap for a full size truck lease. Even at $550 I’m not interested in driving either one of those, at all lol. Hummer EV - absolutely I’d consider. That is solely because I like the looks and think that its kind of a cool truck ha.

Haven’t driven either one yet… but between the two I’d probably lean towards the Ford. Looks more like a normal truck, and I can’t get over the interior of the RST. All I see is my relative’s equinox that I got him for pennies lol. I do like the stupid big wheels on the RST though (until it comes time to replace the tires).

I think value to enjoyment wise - there is not much out there better than one of these high end EV trucks.

I have a Lightning now which I absolutely love. It is in the process of being transferred.

Besides money wise, I sat in silverado. I feel better in ford, more cabin space. Especially in rear seats and front cargo is bigger

Also at this pricing, the Ford comes w Level 2 charger and install for free (to forego the $500 rebate)

Haven’t driven a lightning platinum yet but own an RST EV. Got it to flip but like it so much that my wife is wanting to keep it.

On the RST…
The rear seat space is huge, and plenty space for 2 car seats plus an adult.
Range is true 450+ on a full charge.
Air suspension is nice but truthfully with the massive 24" wheels it’s not as plush as you’d expect.
Looks are subjective but I think definitely wins there.
No Android auto or apple car play on the rst is kind of whack but the Google interface isn’t bad and offers similar functionality to the android auto.
The safety features work surprisingly well which is handy for the size of the truck.
The turning radius is really impressive - even better than my lucid I feel.
Plenty of storage inside that isn’t visible from the outside - comes in handy living in the bay area.
Mid gate is nice but doubt I’ll ever need to take advantage of it.
That’s all i can think of for now. I’ve heard really great things about the lightning but for less than $500 a month all in the RST is a bargain.
