Rising insurance premiums

My insurance company said, if you have 3 cars and 3 drivers, you can’t do that. Each driver gets assigned a car (Which I put them on the oldest car)
Which insurance company allows that?

I think State Farm does it? I have things bundled with USAA, so for now I’ll just leave it. My guess is moving him to a separate insurance would be more expensive.

Before the increase I thought my rates were very reasonable.

SF does do it but based on my absolutely disastrous experiences with them, I’d say to stay away as it’ll end up being more costly in the long run when something happens. Can you ask them to specifically exclude him from your other cars? Meaning if he takes those cars for a ride he’s not covered at all.

Yes, State Farm.

Yes, I did. But the teen is still covered on any car.

I meant if they refuse to designate the kid as an occasional driver as it seems to be the case with @JMMZKDTH l. Then he should ask for a total exclusion if they offer it.

I don’t see where he said that.

You specify the vehicle AND “occasional driver” (i.e. sharing with the main driver) on one car.
But this is too complicated and probably depends on the state.

Exactly, he didn’t say it but if they re-rated Dad’s car, there are a few possibilities of what had transpired including:

A - they didnt make the kid “occasional”, intentionally or otherwise.
B - they automatically re-rated the highest car on the highest rated driver which a lot of carriers do by default unless told otherwise.
C - USAA may have their own rules and I have no idea as I’ve never dealt with them.

They did not re-rate my two cars when I explicitly added my teen to the third only, which was under my name. But again - I have now idea how and why they do what they do.

I have been talking about @JMMZKDTH 's re-rate, not yours, lol!

Yeah, I understand. Different insurance, different states. But he mentioned that he knows SF does it, so I dropped my 2 cents :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, here is my take on SF - avoid at all costs.

Can you expect compassion from ANY insurance?

Within a reason… yeah! At least stay professional and try not to torture someone who is on the ropes (just because you can) and know they cannot fight back.

I’m dreading this day. My son will be 16 next year. I didn’t see the new law for NC on the insurance. I’m gonna have to look into that. It’s been nice having low insurance, between this years rate increases and a licensed teenager gonna be brutal next year.

To be honest I’d check other companies. I don’t find USAA to be competitive anymore. Dropped them years ago. I check every now and then and they are almost double what I have now (Erie).

Thanks for the info and advice. Will call USAA and see if they will do exclusion. I’m expecting no. I’ll check out Erie.

It may also mostly be semantics.

When we were messing with our insurance last year based on our child care provider driving our vehicle, getting her only assigned to only be able to drive our Jetta made almost no difference because as Geico explained it, they just divided the non-vehicle specific things like liability and personal property damage between all our vehicles evenly. The only thing that is cheaper by keeping a younger driver assigned to one car is the comprehensive for that vehicle.

Unrelated, I am becoming increasingly convinced that insurance companies offer far better rates for people who bundle home, auto and umbrella. Not because they want you to use their services for more things (although they do) but because people willing to pay for those services are likely much lower risk - as in almost assuredly not doing ride sharing/food delivery.

And auto insurance is a net loser most years for insurance companies. The rest of the products make a customer profitable generally speaking.

I’m sure. Id Guess they pay out on well below 1% of umbrella policies each year. Very profitable policies.

Definitely. Even homeowners policies outside of the “repeat disaster zones” are extremely profitable.

Curious if any other LA people have gotten new insurance recently and what your quote is? I’m paying 226 right now for 2022 Honda, but I just looked up quotes from all the brands for a new Optiq I was thinking of getting and the rates are insane. $400-500 a month. That can’t be right. I don’t know if there’s something on my driving record I’m unaware of, but I’ve had no accidents or tickets in years that I can recall. The insurance I’m with now is the cheapest, they want $260 which I guess is a bit reasonable, but who is paying half a grand monthly for insurance? I mean it’s a Cadillac but still, that’s crazy.
