Porsche Macan - Interesting convo with the dealership

,

When a car salesman thinks you have your “shit together”, as in you’re about to be ripped off and you’re okay with it, it’s definitely not a good sign for you.

You guys are missing the point. A salesperson works for one dealer. I have 12 Porsche dealers in Southern Cali that I can buy from and they deliver to my house. So when the salesperson asks me if I needed anything else, basically dismissing me for asking too many questions about the Panamera and the Tycan, and thinking I am a tire kicker, because I walked in the dealer looking like a slob in shorts and flip-flops (:
So yes the Porsche buyer is going in to buy, but if the salesperson is arrogant then to the next dealer the buyer will go.

What SUVs were above it when it was introduced in 2002?

Hmm the benz g class and the range rover come to mind.

Lol, this is a strikingly similar experience I had at BMW a few weeks ago.

Went in to check out the X7 M50i and quite literally, before I even finished my sentence where I stated my interest, the sales guy blurts out “Is this for you? you do know that’ll run you in the 1500’s right?” Lol wtf type of socially inept individual says something like that to a potential client. Never went back or returned their phone calls following that event.

& I can’t help but cringe to the first few comments in this thread defending both the sales person and uplifting porsche as if they are the righteous overlords of the auto world.

Except the Cayenne Turbo was more expensive than the Range Rover (which only came in one configuration, IIRC) and roughly the same price as an AMG G-Glass.

The Mercedes ML, the BMW X5, RX300 were all priced well below a Cayenne when the Cayenne was introduced. I consider the ML, RX, and X5 to be “mid-level.” There wasn’t really the equivalent of today’s entry level SUVs back then (as far as I can remember).

One can kind of argue that the Cayenne is an mid-level luxury SUV, but that was not the case, IMHO, when it was introduced.

It’s called setting expectations. If he isn’t going to give you a mooch giveaway deal, he saved the both of you the wasted time and effort.

You have no idea how many people with unreasonable expectations we see, especially in “luxury”. I can’t tell you how many times I spent hours test driving and assessing a customers needs to find out they had a payment expectation in the $600s for a Sport, or $400s on a Velar, or hell even someone that wanted to finance a $60k Evoque with 2k down over 60 months for $500 / month.

Customers are stupid so if saving our time means pissing a few customers off by trying to gauge their payment expectations then so be it.

Cringe all you want but that is the reality. Porsche is a prestigious brand. Most people who are actually Porsche buyers know exactly what they want before they come in. I’d argue @fredyge94 knows a thing or two about Porsche and how the brand works.

They broom time wasters and LeaseHackrs back to BMW.

To negotiate pricing, handle customers, and process paperwork.

You’re thinking of a product specialist. Two different things. If you don’t know what car you want, watch some YouTube videos. Theres no reason to take an entire day test driving multiple vehicles. Pick the one you want and go buy it, it’s not rocket science.

I feel like you aren’t only pissing off a select few customers. Although I’ve made my stance on snide remarks from dealers clear, every other person in my circle of friends/family/acquaintances is no different. I have yet to meet anyone that isn’t insulted by experiences like this to the brink of exiting out of any potential transaction.

More power to anyone that seems to not give a shit about things like this, but it matters to me. And many many others who are capable buyers of these products.

As someone who has a track record of selling an average of 250 cars per year, I can absolutely say it is a very select few. There are perhaps some less abrasive ways to phrase it, but I would always pre-qualify customers in an initial conversation. I’m not investing hours of my own time without knowing there’s even a chance I’d get anything out of it.

And to be brutally honest, the ones that did get offended weren’t buying anything in the first place :man_shrugging:

This thread, but in memes.

You could interchange this meme with any non lh worthy car, “omg! Maserati you could get an m550.” “Omg f150/ram/gm you could get a tundra”, etc etc

This LH Circlejerk (capitalized on purpose) is amazing, thank you, this is why I love you.

  1. Smart dealer, either he set expectations to scare you off or used an excellent psychological mechanism to “anchor” you at a higher number so he could reel you in on something slightly lower, kudos to him. Ps. I’m a psychotherapist in private practice.
  2. Is a salesman really going to convince you of the perceived value of something in an hour (Eg. Porsche) that you’re then going to spend at least $900+ a month on for the next 3 years… at least? PPs. Yes, I’m a small business owner and don’t pretend I can charm potential clients into spending hard earned money on therapy if they’re not already committed to making it happen.
  3. As someone who turned down a Macan S in 2018 for an SQ5 (thought and felt the latter was far superior for the money), I lack the superlatives to describe how much I enjoy my leased 2019 Boxster S during Corona-Quarantine. Yes, I have been critiqued plenty of times here on my beloved LH for spending way too much on said lease.
  4. We car guys are plenty good at rationalizing our ridiculous habit. Don’t play like you don’t know. Plus when you’re having to fork out ungodly sums of money for a mortgage in places like the Bay Area (mi casa), it gets increasingly easy to justify a little extra $$ for the ride we want rather than the specifics of whether we got had for a few bucks/should have gotten a Bimmer/OMG you leased instead of financed a Porsche??!!

It’s funny because you’d think Porsche salespeople would be trained to be able to sell snow to an eskimo. I mean to rationalize $900/month on a Macan, you’d need to do just that. And none of this Porsche is God’s gift to the world crap. Some models are superior but the Macan does not fall into that category at the $900 range.

I guess the growing desire to work with brokers over dealers is outlined in this thread. Who wants to walk into a showroom or get on the phone and get treated as if the person on the other end is doing you the favor, not the other way around. Take my money and also give me a side of snark attitude while you are at it. Yea, no thanks.

You say the Macan does not fall into the $900 a month category. WHAT IF THE SALESPERSON “SELLS YOU ON IT”?!??!

That’s the universal purpose of a salesman. What are you missing?

I research and then buy things.

Quickest way to push me away is to try to sell me something.

Speaking of Porsches. I’m in LOVE with the 996 911 Turbo on Cars & Bids.
