Someone hydroplaned and totaled my son’s Honda Accord (fortunately all the airbags saved him).
He leaves for college in September and desperately need to get him a temporary solution.
Are lease transfers a good idea? I’ve looked on a few sites and can’t seem to find a sedan on the East coast. Would like to stay in a reasonable price point if possible.
This is the right answer. Buying an older vehicle that you do not need to keep collision on is the key. Any monthly savings from a 5 month lease would most likely be offset by insurance costs on that “new” vehicle.
OP, will he have a vehicle at school his sophomore year? If so, just mothball the older one you buy him for the 9 months he is away. Also, having the vehicle at home during freshman year may encourage him to want to come home more, as he will have more freedom than if he is begging to borrow your car over Thanksgiving/Christmas/Next summer.
My oldest just started driving. I gave her one of my old cars. It’s 11 years old but in excellent shape and I know the history of it. That’s what kids should have IMO not brand new cars. I full expect her to ding the shit out of it, curb rash, etc. but it’s 11 years old so whatever. A brand new lease? I’d be sweating every time she got in the car at the potential damage. Not to mention the astronomical insurance costs.
And just the principle of driving a. $50k new car at 16. I don’t want an entitled mentality to develop.
My oldest drives my 2002 e46. It is the cheapest car in our household (my wife 2006 camry worth more LOL). He still doesn’t understand how good that car is (for a new driver) and complains it’s old The insurance was only $280/year, it’s $900/year now (liability only). Can’t imagine a full coverage on polestar will cost for 18yo driver.
It is not necessarily more expensive to insure a new car vs. an older car. My 2025 Lexus NX is cheaper to insure than the 2012 Camry it replaced. I assume it is due to all the safety features the new car has.
We gave him our Honda Accord and the safety features prevented him from dying. So I’m quite OK when it’s not his fault in an accident, to get him another car. The only issue is he’s leaving for college so I don’t need a car past four months.
