Is it good idea to pay 20K for a 2016 BMW 428i coupe with 31k mileage in current market?

, ,

In general, hows the reliability for this car. Never had a BMW before.
The car has a minor accident in carfax. Vin: WBA3N9C54GK249696.

Any suggestion or idea would be much appreciated! Thanks hackrs

It is a 6 year old car. If you plan to purchase this out of warranty BMW, I would recommend doing some research on extended warranty plans and coverage.

I own a 428i and I think you shouldn’t worry about reliability much until 100k miles. Ofc if you maintain it properly (warm up before pushing, oil etc on time). N20 engines before 2016 have timing chain issues but ur car should be good. And there’s an extended warranty for that in case something happens to it

In short, very reliable car. Don’t be afraid, too many rumors about bmw

Since OP is looking into buying a used car, there is no way for him to know if it was maintained properly. I thought the first rule of Leasehackr is that you never want to own a German car after the warranty expires.

Pardon, i was thinking he’s buying out own lease. 20K for this car is cheap in this market nevertheless.
Didn’t know there are ANY rules on this forum regarding car brands

A cheap car in this market is probably a red flag that there’s something seriously wrong with it. Everyone is sucking every penny they can get out of buyers right now.

Care to share more? Front end damage? Were airbags deployed?

Is it a private sale or is it through a dealer?

It was on rear end. Carfax stated minor damage, no air bag deployed. I have heard a lot about how a used bmw will be a endless money pit… but since the car is only 31k miles, I personally would like to take a shot.

Also its a private sale. below is the carfax infor. I don’t know if you guys can open it or not.

I personally would never buy a car that has been in an accident, but to each their own. If you’re buying for your own use, I’d say mileage is far less relevant than care and maintenance.

And yes, a BMW can be an endless money pit. Or it can be…normal. A lot of that has to do with the aforementioned care and maintenance.

Thanks for so much for the info. That gives me a big relief.

I’m meeting the seller to see the car tomorrow. Will come back with some updates and pics.

Counterpoint to this: my father in law almost exclusively buys rebuilt titles. None have ever given him problems, as long as you know what to look for and have a good PPI. Same applies to your bmw here OP

Unless you are a mechanic or know your way around cars, I would recommend bringing along a mechanic to inspect the car.

The carfax shows three previous owners. The first owner leased it. The second owner had it for about 2 years, while the third/current owner has had it for less than a year. Did they say why they are selling it?

The Carfax estimates the retail value is 29k. There must be something wrong with the car, since the seller is asking only 20k.

Sounds like the classic luxury import deferred maintenance curve to me.

I wouldn’t buy that without having a shop do a full inspection. Even if they find nothing you will be able to figure out how soon tires/brakes are going to be due (and estimate costs easily). You might find something like it actually has frame damage and can’t align properly, heavy fluid seeping etc and avoid a disaster.

People tend to ignore major maintenance because they might be a lot more expensive than the minor maintenance at the dealer. That said 31K miles is low and I personally wouldn’t worry about minor rear damage. I would say there is a 50/50 chance you will regret it later but at $20K in this market, it may be worth to roll the dice.

Good luck.
