Is it good idea to pay 20K for a 2016 BMW 428i coupe with 31k mileage in current market?

  1. Professional inspection is crucial
  2. Realize that an accident on carfax is a good 20% hit to value (dealers won’t agree to this when selling but have no problem doing it to you when taking in your trade)
  3. Being the 4th owner will hit the value, too. I don’t have a specific number for this, but I’d probably alot for 25% total between the accident and 3 previous owners in just 6 years.

SO, in short, if you love it, knock off 25% off fair private party value for the history and knock off any deferred maintenance brought up in the inspection. If inspection discloses any residual ill effects from the accident, walk away.

Go for it. I have a 2022 X5 M50i and I got my kid a pre owned 2017 320xi. I have had problems with neither. Two weeks after she got her car someone ran a stop sign and did about 12k of front damage. She was unhurt, car was repaired, and runs as good as the day it was purchased. Two distinctly different stories and I still am comfortable having my new driver kid riding in this. I really think fears about BMW and out of warranty concerns are overblown.
