Genesis Dealers - are they all difficult to work with?

Maybe it’s just the luck of the draw, but I’ve not had great experiences the two local dealers I’ve visited as well as the 7 of the 8 genesis dealers I’ve reached out to with a target deal on an EV GV70, is it something with the brand?

First dealer I went to test drive had 0 employees in the entire dealership. it was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen. Doors open, lights on, not a single employee in the entire place. Waited there for 30+ minutes and just left after two other customers showed up and were just as confused.

Second dealer was better, was able to test drive and really enjoyed the car and they actually had an advertised price on one of the cars that was right on par with my target deal, but alas, the one car that would work for the price was “spoken for”, all the others were $150+/mo more expensive. Convenient. And yet, two weeks later, that one car still shows on their website as available.

Now that I driven it and really liked it, started reaching out to dealers online over the past two weeks, first confirming availability of a specific stock #, then making an offer with my target deal. In total I’ve contacted 7 Genesis dealers in the south, 5 stopped responding after I sent the numbers I was aiming for (4% off MSRP), just silence. not even a counter offer. One got oddly confrontational, called me after I texted him the deal and was straight up rude. Told me I was lying about the numbers I got straight off their site. The last one was fine, but couldn’t come close.

On a whim, I reached out to a dealer in Utah and the salesman was amazing, SUPER friendly and helpful, but alas, they didn’t have any cars left that could work.

Most never bothered to counter, or even engage in a discussion about the price.

Such a different experience than my times working with BMW and Mercedes dealers, I don’t think a single one ever didn’t respond, and when they did, it was at least polite, or with a counter offer, or an idea about possibly a different specced car.

Is my experience unusual, or par for the course with Genesis?

IDK if there’s an actionable answer to this question.

I’d suggest instead focusing that energy on reaching out to your 15th or 20th Genesis dealer before moving on from the brand.

Or ship from coastal brokers in the Marketplace if there are none closer.

We visited one of the Columbus-area Genesis dealers a couple of weekends ago.

Facility was old and really shabby.

We wandered the lot for a while, then went into the showroom and looked at the only car inside.

It was a ~15 minute visit in total, and we never saw another customer or an employee, although from the showroom we could hear what sounded like small talk coming from an office.

We gave up and left. I wasn’t hot on the brand when we walked in, but the experience definitely left an indelible impression.

Spouse is much more forgiving, but Genesis is now dead to both of us. The entire brand.

If you ask this question here, the most answers you’ll get are probably “stop trying but go hire a broker instead” lol

JK. But yeah Genesis experiences are generally bad.

I think you mean Hyundai dealership experience?!

When I was last in the market ~5.5 yrs ago, 2 BMW dealerships never bothered to contact me after I reached out to them, informing them that I was interested in a specific car on their lot.

One MB dealership had a few salespeople contact me once and then would ghost me. A salesperson from another dealership was clearly yanking my chain, while another totally misrepresented the situation when I wrote a bad review on-line about how we were basically at the stage where I was going to come in to sign the paperwork and the salesperson ghosted me.

But, to answer your question more directly, I am under the impression that the Genesis experience is considerably worse than, like, every other luxury make. So, no, your experience is probably, sadly, not unusual.

One aspect to consider is that E-leads, one of if not the most used CRM systems in the country (almost all dealer quotes I see here are printed on E-leads) has been down since the 19th. This means that they cannot see emails/texts/most leads etc. Doesn’t mean that genesis dealers are very good but it could be the reason that some of those haven’t responded if you were talking to them before 6.19

Did anybody call it the “Land of Confusion”?

Yea. 99% sure I’ll land on a Rivian R1T now. The three years free charging with Genesis was enticing as I live across the street from an Electrify America station, but I’m turned off by the brand.

Agreed.

Kia and Hyundai have come a long way, but they are still Kias and Hyundais.

Well they all initially responded (and it was after the 19th), it was just mostly once I made the offer… silence. Some even sent me a text and we were chatting over iMessage, silence.

Even the separate Genesis dealers aren’t that great… but I guess that’s what you get when you spend less on a luxury brand. When I get my BMW serviced, I am treated like royalty. I mean anything I ask, you name it to be honest. Loaner of my choice, car wash, amazing cookies/drinks, etc. But then again I did buy from Sewell though, so

No, but at that point I felt like I was already in too deep.

Ok, at this point I’m convinced Genesis dealers just truly suck.

One of the dealers I reached out to that never initially responded finally reached out to me, with the July incentives they actually could come close to my numbers. Car showed in stock. Everything looked good. Sure enough, when I let them know I was going to head over to purchase, magically the car was no longer available and they only could sell me one at $3k more.

I’m done with Genesis and their shitty dealers.

Not sure where you are at but a guy in the california (so-cal) marketplace seems to be competent enough to post a comprehensive lease special list. Not sure if he can help you if you are out of state or not (I also don’t know or benefit from him in any way, I just liked his posts as they are direct and clear)

That is the post I was referring to

Thank you! I don’t think I’ve had the opportunity to help out OP. I get messages almost daily about a 2024 Genesis GV70 EV lease deal but unfortunately we sold out first week of June at my store. The 2025 models don’t have the same $18500 incentive so the lease is higher.

Ok - I’m at a loss for words now and hoping you all can help me figure out what might be going on. As i’m sure some of you are aware from my previous posts, I had been targeting an Electrified GV70 for a little over a month. You can see more about what transpired here.

Anyway, I give up and move on to Rivian. Nevertheless, as the month goes by a few of the Genesis dealers start to reach back out and want to make something happen as the 2025’s are showing up on the lots. One in particular gets pretty aggressive with their pricing and as their store was closing Sat night, we agree to try and finalize today. They call me today, good conversation, and they come w/I $20 of my target deal. We agree to terms and they take my deposit, telling me the finance manager will call me shortly to sign.

30 minutes later they call me back and say the car was sold Sat night and they don’t have any more. No attempt to even sell me on another car.

This is now the 2nd time about a month that I’ve agreed to terms with a Genesis dealer (this one went as far as taking a deposit), only to have them come back and tell me never mind, the car was already sold and they don’t even try to sell me on another.

I just don’t get it. Did the GM nuke the deal or something? Am I on some list? We never even got to the point of taking my SSN and running credit.

Any ideas?
