Flags and moderation

So, just quoting myself for my $0.02. We all adults here - just hide flagged posts and make the option to see it available to all. No different from going to Landfill to see moderated posts.
Also, add a button to bring posts to moderators’ immediate attention, if needed, instead of waiting for certain amount of people to flag it. Mods then can decide to “flag” (hide), landfill it or let it be.

So that would now be $0.04, would it not?

It’s still $0.02 since no one cashed in the first $0.02

I did, that’s why I said that.

You lost me. V&M (i.e. no one) did not…but if offering it twice doubles it, than so be it.

Don’t be lost Bear. Your $0.04 is in good hands.

I don’t understand how anything works here anymore.

At least you got explanation without explanation lol

Let me see if your suggestions are technically feasible with the forum software. Meanwhile, here are my 2 cents:

  1. The problem with Landfilling is that people start attacking the individual mod who landfilled their posts.
  2. I don’t see the value in showing offensive posts that have been hidden by the mods. These posts tend to be contentious and trigger more offensive posts.

I am not saying that the current system is perfect, but the previous system wasn’t working. Some people are upset because some other members do not agree with their political position. We have been rejecting flags where the flagger simply disagree with the political position of the poster, not because the post contains disallowed content.

As much as we mods try to be neutral, folks would accuse mods for being biased, not doing enough, and at the same time over-moderating (@ursus I think you were once on that boat). It’s unfair to the mods and past THs who tried their best to keep this space healthy.

I think the best solution is to keep Leasehackr Forum focused on car shopping and personal finance. Please bring your political opinions elsewhere – Elon spent $44bn to promote political discourse on X. You don’t win over political arguments here; you win by scoring a better deal and helping others.

I agree. I think it’s been proven constructive political arguments are not feasible here. Time to bring it back to the Thanksgiving dinner table, where politics is better off as a no-fly zone. Folks can take the politics to Reddit, and we can just hack leases and meme lounge here!

Hide the mods’ names. It can also be done by mods themselves with removing links to the landfilled posts.

Posts get hidden by “reputable” members, not by mods. Mods then review these flags. There is subjectivity in the both steps, so why not leave up to members if they want to read?

Right, this comes with the territory, there is no way around this.

With car shopping become so intertangled with government incentives and policy, this is, quite frankly impossible. The IRA, interest rates, tariff, Elon, Pro-EV and Anti-EV threads will keep coming. Stopping them is futile and IMO leaves out important aspects of the decision-making process.

Instead of suppressing this conversation, why not put it in a restricted area, that can only be accessed via consent or opt-in. A home for the flagged posts and non-toxic political discussion.

Suggestions:
-OP’s on threads should be exempt from slow mode, unless they themselves start violating community rules
-On polarizing and controversial topics, consider imposing a limit as to the number of times a user can post in that thread. We’re seeing a few people who are seemingly glued to their screens chomping at the bit to reply to every post and they make the same points over and over again. Those who are just tuning in can’t even read most of the thread because it is fast moving.
-I’ll say it again. We need more than 6 moderators if we are going to give leeway to topics threading the “no politics rule” needle.

That’s a good idea. Will need to look into whether it’s feasible within the existing forum software.

Any more volunteers?

You need to abandon the fantasy that you can moderate your way around the political

Stick to your guns. No politics, period.

That includes any prognostications around tariffs, economics, etc etc. Because frankly nobody knows what will happen tomorrow NTM a week or a month or a year from now. Anybody pretending to know is fooling themselves.

You’re 100% right but my concern is how do you NOT talk tariffs/economics when it comes to leases and car shopping? Unfortunately these tariffs are a huge part of the buying process going forward unless they’re rescinded. We’re already seeing multiple manufacturers stop importing cars to the US and as dealers and manufacturers have more clarity, the politics will continue to be an integral part of car shopping. To stifle all conversations of politics means that LH won’t be an effective forum for car shoppers.

@littleviolette and @michael -

Smart people with reasoned insight and experience can and do chime in on those threads and they are fine.

People that can’t or won’t keep up (like what is quoted above) don’t want the threads and that’s fine because they can stay out or in the shallow end of the pool anyway.

Hard choices are made by adults.

I am often missing something, but I actually think it might not be that different from what the normal discussing of hacking here is. Are you shopping the deal or the car? And that’s pretty much it, TBH.

I do agree that I think anything beyond is extraneous b/c the thread always ends up devolving.
