They also tried to emulate Tesla making funky futuristic designs, and that hasn’t been well received. There was no purpose for that imo, you’re trying to get new people to adopt a platform, keep things simple. Theres a reason most cars and trucks look the same, it’s the most functional design.
Well, they probably will, but Toyota is rarely leading innovation.
They will wait until the tech is matured and the market is ready to be dominated by a value leader, and then they’ll do what they do best and @Jrouleau426 will be swimming in a pool of cash…
Yeah 60k tacos aren’t being very well accepted I doubt 70k ones will either Toyotas being a bit too aggro on pricing imo lately. They need to chill
Because it wasn’t competitive in a crowded space.
With Tesla dominating that segment, putting out an EV Tacoma would have been good counter programming.
And just like Ford was able to come out with the Lightning way faster than Tesla and Chevy… I think the truck format would have been an easy production path using some Toyota ingenuity and existing lines (or are the Germans the only ones who can EQB/GLB).
But I’m a couch engineer so I’m probably way off.
Wow. That’s like Stellantis territory.
Are they at least doing nice rebates?
Yup.
I’ve never driven one (and could never afford one in a million yrs), but the “compromises” needed to achieve the objective (top speed bragging rights) while retaining some level of Mercedes-ness and similarity to the concept resulted in a car that was, IMHO, a little ugly, overweight, priced too high, and only good for that one thing (top speed stability).
It was not a particularly good handler subjectively, if I remember the reviews correctly.
It also wasn’t the car that Gordon Murray wanted, either:
https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15123071/gordon-murray-what-id-do-differently-feature/
I also didn’t like the SLS, either, in case you were wondering. Robert Cumberford savaged it in his design analysis (https://www.motortrend.com/news/2011-mercedes-benz-sls-amg-design-analysis/), and I completely agree. It was a truly ugly and graceless design.
I think the AMG GT is much better.
What’s a rebate? Toyotas specials are like 5.99% financing
It’s these things manufacturers use to artificially lower the price of a vehicle they’ve overpriced for the market.
Toyota lays that burden on their dealers lately. Maybe in the future they will do something but for now it’s very little. 6500 off prime and 3k discount and the leases are still 700/mo! They did give us $500 off gas ravs for a week over prez day haha
Just grabbed an ID4, 10% off and $18350 in incentives and tax rebates, that’s really sustainably
To be fair, the “futuristic” designs are necessary due to the impact of drag physics on the mileage. Notice how cars like the Lucid looks like a tear drop? Well that’s the most efficient shape to minimize the impact wind against the car. It may not look sexy to you, but these weird shapes mean it can get up to 500 miles/range.
Aerodynamics is nothing new in autos. Rivian gets range in a truck also so…
I was more talking about the interior as well. Some people still like buttons
It is starting…the losses on EVs are not sustainable.
Mercedes-Benz on Thursday delayed its electrification goal by five years…
They should have caveated 50% of sales would be EVs by 2025*
*in states like CA with actual EV infrastructure.
Even 50% by 2030 will be impossible in the 40 flyover states
I guessed before even reading it that it had to be in Europe. Morons…
Without that reassurance, big corporate customers who make up a large chunk of the car market, particularly in Europe where many people are offered a car as part of their work package, may be forced to turn away from electric power.
Gun to head
What’s so special about a $785 discount?
Nothing. Monthly is no bad IMO😎
BTW Rodo just confirmed that the car is available at that price.
There’s no point measuring depreciation from some arbitrary MSRP. What do the numbers look like after discounting and rebates? And is that worse than any other form of propulsion? Do gas, diesel or hydrogen powered cars do better?
