EV Discussion Thread

Well this money was issued through valid provisions in the IRA, which is a duly passed piece of legislation. To undue it the DOGE boys are going to need a change the law. Which is certainly doable.

But I do wonder if the GOP Congressman representing this district, and the surrounding districts, are going to want to go home talking about how they worked to keep this federal money from coming to their area.

Yep, but aside from the local pork issue as to those congress members and the Rivian plant, there will be almost nothing to stand in the way of what the GOP-controlled House and Senate can/will do for the former and future President, Musk and Ramaswamy.

Not saying it is right or wrong but it is the reality of January of 2025.

Yes but it is funny how local pork is pretty important to Congressman who have to get reelected every two years. Wouldn’t be an issue if Johnson could afford to lose more than a few votes but…he can’t.

Does he even fit in a Lucid Air? I tried to sit in one and it’s pretty low.

Well, his is converted to 2 seats for a reason.

He sat in that Buick for that one dumb ass ad back in the day.

I test drove one earlier this year when I was looking to lease a base Air. It was low to the ground, but fun to drive. At the time, the deal I was offered was more than what I was paying for my '21 Audi A6 lease. I am not an SUV guy, but I wouldn’t mind test driving the Gravity (when it is available at a Lucid studio).

Does anyone know if this is a mode of a Sapphire?

Too early for any Q6 deals. Hopefully it will be priced as in leases, between the Q4 and Q8. It looks promising with its new platform.

I believe I read somewhere it was indeed a Sapphire. I am trying to find the article.

Nothing particularly shocking here… Exclusive: Trump transition team plans sweeping rollback of Biden EV, emissions policies | Reuters

Here is a good summary I found-

  1. Cutting EV Support:
  • The transition team proposes ending the Biden administration’s $7,500 tax credit for EV buyers. This incentive has helped make EVs more affordable for many Americans.
  • It also recommends halting federal funding for EV charging stations. These funds would be redirected to strengthen the U.S. battery supply chain and national defense.
  1. Imposing Tariffs:
  • New tariffs on battery materials, components, and EV supply chain imports are suggested. These tariffs aim to protect U.S. industries and reduce dependence on imports, particularly from China.
  • The document mentions negotiating exemptions with allied countries while maintaining tariffs globally.
  1. Rolling Back Emissions Standards:
  • The team proposes returning emissions and fuel-economy standards to 2019 levels. This change would allow more gas-powered vehicles and relax the stricter limits championed under the Biden administration.
  • Blocking California from setting its own stricter emissions standards is also recommended. California’s policies have influenced over a dozen other states to adopt tougher rules.
  1. National Defense Focus:
  • The team emphasizes that battery materials and critical minerals are essential for U.S. national security. Funds previously allocated for EV support would go toward ensuring these materials are free from reliance on China.
  • Programs promoting electric military vehicles would be ended, with resources redirected to defense priorities.

Hyundai just announced free NACS for all active Hyundai owners

Mercedes was supposed to start this year and haven’t heard a peep since the announcement in 2023.

New CLA EV seems like a game changer in the segment.

800v, 320kw charging ability
Hyper efficient, ~350 mi range

CLA EV on the road

having NACs for DCFS and J1772 for slow charging makes no sense

Sure it doesn’t make a lot of sense, and probably adds some cost to manufacture the vehicle. But for the car owner, does it really matter? Seems like everyone is destined to be carrying adapters all the time anyway for the next few years, some NACS → CCS, some CCS → NACS, some NACS → J1772, etc. Sure there might be some initial confusion when you purchase the new car, but people will quickly figure it out and it will be no big deal.

Let’s see what 2025 brings. Many are saying that EVs will be more expensive (esp leasing) because of the rumored IRA reversal but I think we will still see some deals.

My leases end this year so maybe Cali will step up with incentives (or I need to establish a CO address  ).

Happy new year!
