Electrify America - Experiences and Discussion

I’ve tried using EA for a different EV than the one on a free plan and the charger recognized that it was a different car.

If there is a way around it, if it based on using the EA app vs the OEMs app?

Was there an error message of some sort ?

I imagine if you have plug and charge activated on 2 cars, and one of them is free while other is not then you may have an issue. However, I think I am able to activate EA charger via Mercedes App before I even plugin, which makes me think I would be able to start free charge session even if the “other vehicle” has plug and charge activated.

IIRC, if asked me to choose a payment method. I usually plug in first and then activate the charger on the app (as recommended by EA). Now I’m curious. I have my Audi activated through the Audi app and my BMW through the BMW app (used to use the EA app). I’m going to try activating through one brand app and plugging in a different brand car to see what happens.

Yes, try activating before plugging in.

I’ve successfully charged multiple Mercedes and BMW cars by activating EA charger via Mercedes app.

I’ve noticed that too. Need to test on EVGo to see whether it’s the car or charger.

I used this in conversation today.

Tried to go to a station that I’ve seen only once… bad idea. It’s next to a large outdoor mall and has a terrible setup. No way to line up properly and people park in parking spots next to the chargers thinking that hold their place in line so no one knows if there is someone waiting.

2 people got into a disagreement of who was there first and since it turns out I had 3 cars in front of me instead of 1, I just went to another station about 10 minutes away. It’s only 150kw chargers (which is probably why it’s usually not crowded) and I stayed there a full 30 minutes since there was no one waiting (and even then I left before the 2 cars that were there before me… an EQB and an ID4).

I find it funny that people prioritize the 350kw stations when their cars can’t even go over the 150kw rates. The 150s work for me because sometimes the rate goes higher.

So true. My go-to EA station has 3 “balanced” 350s and a single 150. The 150kW is located some distance away from the 350s. There is often a long line at the 350s with a single car charging at the 150. I pretty much always go for the 150. On top of all of this, my EQS often get 180kW power from the 150kW charger, while the balanced 350s will very often provide less than that.

Overnight top off at the chargepoint… Yes I’m cheating on the juicepimp. 10 degrees… But it’s only a 7.2k plug.

EV America. Plugged in and started charging. Left for 30 minutes. Came back and the car stopped charging with 3 % charged. Restarted and left again. Again it did not charge. Called customer service and they could not provide any explanation. 2.5 hours of my time… Horrible.

I would bet dollars to donuts that the credit card attached to your account has expired or is no longer valid. This is the behavior we usually see with EA.

New car. 2 years of free charge. They claimed the car ended sent the signal to stop both times. 100% sure that was not the car. Plugged it in again and the third time it worked while I was standing next to it.

That sounds awful. I actually never leave my car while it’s charging. I don’t fast charge that often, but I did couple of weeks ago after coming back from a cruise. My car was filthy because it was parked outside for a week, so I brought a spray bottle with diluted ONR and some rags to wash the car while it was charging. First, it wouldn’t take my apple wallet EA app, but it let me start charging for free (I guess their payment system was broken). But then less than 5 minutes later, it just stopped charging. I tried starting it again, and it wouldn’t work. So I just moved my car to the next stall, and it was able to charge. An ID4 pulled up to the charger that I was trying to charge a few minutes later and was able to charge without issue.

Just be happy that EA has some kind of ‘contingency which it sees stuff go wrong’ instead of ‘a Bolt Fire’. EA has taken all the money MB, Kia, and Hyundai gave them for charging and spent it, on other things than Infrastructure /sigh.

Trying to charge my eqs at Carle Place, NY
Two units out of 4 broken. 5 cars in line…
Had to charge overnight with Level 2 at home second time since March 2023. LOL
Looking now and sounds that today all of them work.

Did they turn them off, then on again?

Yes we have tried but it did not work. today they fixed them :grinning:

Even with the two years free charging it does require a valid credit card to be attached the EA account. They will put a $20 hold on your credit card each time in case you go over the allotted 30 minutes of free charging. Since it’s a brand new car, can you confirm that you’ve never attached a credit card to your EA account? I’d be very surprised if that works!!
