Currently considering a lease on a 2025 Volvo EX30 in Colorado. It would be my first EV. Was recommended by a few folks to lease an EV over finance - but want to make sure it makes sense. I currently own a 2018 Golf R (paid off) and am in a wheelchair - I want something with power, is small, and I NEED a hatchback (again - wheelchair). The EX30 is the closest thing I could find right now that fits my needs until the EV market isn’t so saturated with SUVs and they seem like a great deal since you get $13k off the top with the EV rebate lease incentive. It’s not shown in the price breakdown attached, but I also get an additional $500 off because of my employer.
I’m working with Mcdonald Volvo in CO and have reserved a Twin motor Ultra that is supposed to show up on the 13th of this month. Ideally, I would put $0 down and roll taxes and fees into lease payment (unless that’s not recommended?). The dealership also recommended buying out the lease after a few months and switch to a finance - but I don’t know the logistics behind this and if it’s a solid financial move.
Attached below are the numbers the dealership sent over last night.
MSRP/Retail: $48,395
McDonald Price: $48,395
Rebate Reductions: $13,100
Total Savings + Rebates: $13,100
D&H fee: $799
Volvo Lease Fee: $995
Adjusted Cap Cost: $35,858.70
Residual Value: $31,456,75
Due at signing: $3,000.00
Mo. Payment: $507
I plugged all of this into the lease calculator and got a number that was around $100 cheaper AND with $0 down. This would be my first time negotiating a lease and I want to be informed before going in to move that number down and make sure it’s justified.
Is this deal any good?
Thanks!! And sorry in advance for any information I may have left out. Happy to provide more - just ask.
I’m looking to move to an EV. I need a hatchback. I’ve test driven 6-or so EVs now and the only ones that fit my chair are giganto-SUVs. I want something fun and fast and relatively small that I don’t have to disassemble my chair every time I get into. Basically, a golf. The EX30 seems to come closest right now. Or an ioniq 5N - the price is just too high.
To answer your question - anything that matches my golf R in performance roughly and isn’t any bigger than a 5N.
EVs tend to have very steep depreciation; so buying out an EV lease is generally considered a bad move.
The EX30 was just released (I think), so it’s hard to know if this is a good deal for an EX30 at this specific point in time. It is not a good deal compared to other EVs.
But there are not really many other similar sized EVs (except a Leaf?)…
Yeah, I’m looking for something with 400+ HP and enough space for my wheelchair. I know the ioniq 5 leases well and is fun to drive - it’s just a little bulky for my taste. I wouldn’t fully discount it. The Volvo seemed to tick all my boxes though. I’m used to paying a little extra for the convenience of things because my needs are very niche with my disability - so I’m a little pickier. I don’t need an absolute steal of a deal - just want to know I’m not getting ripped off on a lease
IMO the EX30 is not worth the massive premium over the other cars.
Look at Marketplace deals in California and imagine adding a net $4,000 rebate to those deals (bigger rebate and lower discount in CO) —- everyone else in the country would jump at the chance to score a CO deal.
I guess the point of this thread was to not be moved into leasing a different car and rather, what would be an acceptable figure I could throw back at them without them laughing in my face. Sorry if that wasn’t clear! I’ve test driven a lot of cars and out of all of them, this one fits my very specific needs the most. My disability means that ease of throwing my chair in the back and having it be as small as possible is key for navigating my parking garage with extremely limited space.
Maybe this isn’t the right place to post for that advice though (I’m new)! I really appreciate all the advice - just not exactly what I’m looking for. I’ve found a car that seems to tick all my boxes - now Im looking for some ammo to throw back at them to get it down to the best number I can.
The 5N isn’t any less bulky than the 5 and currently the AWD Limited is about 30% less than this EX30, a RWD SEL is under half the cost of this. Someone just posted numbers on a 5N that were 2x this EX30. AFAIK still faster charging on Hyundai/Kia than Volvo EVs.
If it isn’t another Golf/GTI, EV deals are Equinox/Blazer/Prologue/ZDX. For hatch if you haven’t tried Polestar 3 see if that accommodates your chair without folding.
Respectfully, I think all the other cars suggested (w/ the exception of the Kona or Niro) are way, way bigger than an EX30, and OP has already stated that size and performance are top priorities.
OP, I think the problem is that the EX30 is so new that dealers might not be willing to discount them much (or at all, in your case), esp since CO has so many rebates/incentives. I don’t know if anyone else has posted about an EX30 here, so that means there’s really no data for comparison on LH.
You could try perusing a Volvo-specific forum to see if there’s any more data there, but, again, leasing an EV in CO might be a unique case.
It might be a pay-to-play sort of thing. Is there a reason you need a new car now? EX30 deals might get better once the car’s been out longer (although who knows what will happen in the future).
My warranty is expiring at the end of December on my golf R. I’ve owned a couple of German cars out of warranty in the past and it’s been a nightmare. So it doesn’t need to happen immediately, but I’m trying to knock it out ASAP. Renting cars while my car is in the shop is also a nightmare (very few car rental shops have vehicles equipped with hand controls). So I’m usually out of a car during maintenance periods.
Size and performance are the biggest factors for me. The only other car I would consider as of right now would be the ioniq 5 - it does feel like an SUV though and it’s not the car I really want. Handicapped spots in my garage are limited and there are pillars everywhere. A neighbor has an ioniq 5 and I just barely squeeze through his parking spot when wheeling by in my chair.
As for the new-factor of the EX30: I figured that would be an issue making the post here. I just don’t know how much info is being withheld at the dealership so they get the better end of the deal. Sounds like everyone is still kind of in the dark here though. I would be happy paying within $100-150 of a Ioniq 5 monthly payment because I don’t have to worry about the added bulk in my garage and the EX30 performance is a little zippier. I’m used to paying premiums (granted I’m not getting ripped off) for the sake of convenience - it makes my life easier.
It’s not just the size of the Ioniq 5 – take a look at the (horrific) turning circle.
I’m kind of the same position (regarding having to park in tight spots w/ a fair number of pillars and having the warranty end on my Sportwagen at end the of yr). Finding a narrow car w/ a tight turning radius that doesn’t feel like a piece of sh*t inside or drive like crap is not an easy task.
@frenchfry - My attempt at the calculator below assuming base MF. Feel to update the sales tax (set to 2.9%) and government fees (set to $200). My guess is that they are marking up the money factor, hence the discrepancy in numbers. This is for a 24 month, 12k miles/year lease.
Calculator with marked up MF for the same terms. My numbers are close to what the dealer shared with you.
Thanks for running some numbers! I also suspected MF was being hiked up… I have never had to negotiate a lease before, haha. Would I just approach them and say, “I suspect your MF is here - I want it here. Can you make that work for me?” or is it more complex than that?
Yeah I noticed that too (only test drove the 5N, but I expect they’re similar). It truly is a big boi. I think until you’re in one/right in front of one, they can seem much smaller. I had my golf parked next to it and it was immediately apparent how much larger of a car it is
