I would go take a nice long drive in both a new X1 and a RAV4 before making decision.
Owning both a Rav 4 and a BMW, the BMW is superior in most aspects besides reliability(which shouldn’t be too bad if you take care of it).
The Rav 4 is bland but has the necessary everyday features.
Going from 4 BMW leases to a Rav 4, you’re going to feel disappointed.
True. Maybe I should take advantage of the 30d-return policy at CarMax…
I would be very surprised if Carmax had a new X1 but that may work for the ‘Yota.
I understand your comparing based on whats falls under a price spectrum. That has its pros and cons, and you would be jumping between segments. Not for normal folks and I would highly advise you have some seat time between each vehicle with you and your primary passengers/stuff etc.
In addition, check what options you need and options you can live without very closely. 23s I R4s are shipping with a much more improved Toyota Cloud powered system thats inline with BMW idrive.
That being said, your list of requirements skew towards a Toyota/Lexus product more then a BMW.
Finally if you can schedule a Lexus NX and Venza test drive back to back. While the powertrain of Venza would be superior, the interior of the NX imho might make more sense.
long term the required maintenance of the BMW is going to just be worlds apart from the Toyota.
But I agree owning a new X1, vs a new R4, its X1 all day.
The way I tell folks about TMC products in that spectrum is:
R4 (Value) → Venza (premium) → NX (luxury).
The Venza is just a weird offering btw. That electrochromatic sunroof is straight Rolls Royce level product that they just happily dumped onto a Toyota product and have not heard about being installed in any of their luxury products (why).
Have you test driven both? That’s usually the tie breaker for me.
Active blind spot detection, Lane departure warning, Frontal collision warning and braking.
Also the new tech in BMW’s is some of the best. With the new large screen and idrive 8.0.
2023 X1 is a big leap forward for the model, complete redesign. See if your local dealer has one, they are so new they might not.
That is one thing I would not enjoy. I seriously considered getting a Supra at one point, but honestly after visiting Toyota dealership it just wasn’t the same. Guess I am a dealership snob, but I much rather visit BMW service center for maintenance. Plus it is fun seeing what BMW loaner you get for the day…3er, 5er, x3, x5. BMW free maintenance is another year long, 3/36k vs 2/25k.
When I had an MB, it was C-Class (and I was bringing in a C-Class for service)… Until they started loaning out CLAs and GLAs… until they stopped b/c they apparently had too many customer complaints about that! Hah!
We used to loan out ML, GLK‘s, C’s, E’s, and the occasional S for S owners.
Yeah, I would imagine that the S-Class owners get anything from C-Class on up, whereas I doubt C-Class owners get anything but a C-Class. I totally get that. I just wouldn’t have minded trying out another MB for a day b/c there’s no other way I’m ever going to drive those cars.
Active Blind Spot Detection, whats that entail?
Rav 4 I believe has TSS 2.5, but Toyota and Lexus standard right now is 3.0 (UA on the Toyota side but available on the NX side)
Car will attempt to counter steer, if it detects something in your blind spot and if you seem to be ignoring the warnings and attempt the lane change.
“Regular” blind spot assist is not part of TSS (and is not standard on many Toyota).
No comparison. The RAV4 is a miserable car to drive. If you want to look at a Japanese car more comparable to a BMW, you should check out the Mazda CX-30, CX-5, or CX-50.
I just had a RAV4 a few weeks ago as a Sixt rental. While it is likely something I would never purchase myself, I don’t see anything horribly wrong with it. It drives OK enough, has a fair amount of space, and gets stupid fuel mileage.
I’ve never been much of a fan of Mazda, other than the obligatory rx7. Rx8 were decent cars in their prime, but the rotary is far from bulletproof. Other than that, it’s mostly a brand of economical garbage imo.
Toyota will mop the floor with BMW, in terms of reliability. I’ve never been a fan of the budget class German models either, so pick your poison.
You’re only confused because you don’t have the conviction to prioritize your own priorities.
Instead you’re letting the internet do what it does, and gaslight you into prioritizing other things.
You’re going to have to make up your own mind. You can do it.
Thanks. I like that system, its a whole lot better then the usual BSM alerts.
Was looking at the X1 as well. This was the first dealer deal response. Ouch. This is at MSRP with no discount not MAV.
Many dealers don’t have them on their lots yet.
I believe ours is significantly less than that.
