Auto Industry’s Vested Interest to Restore Leasing

Looks like Leasing is back in a big way. Leasing EV is taking the forefront, but even ICE vehicles continue to lease in large quantities. Even if there are a ton of people on LH who hate ICE leases and complain about how dumb it is to lease ICE in every single thread that discusses an ICE vehicle.

Data from Experian’s Q4 2024 reporting.

I feel like @aronchi and @thevolvoguy are the reason over 75% of Volvo/Polestar are leases.

Most EVs are Teslas and leases on those suck. The percentage for EVs except Tesla is probably 90%.

This is super interesting. Thank you for sharing!

88% of Polestar is leased? 61% of Porsche is leased despite their lease program not being attractive? That piques my interest in the demographic of folks who lease.

Fascinating data. I was also shocked polestar is 88% leased too. TBH I looked at leasing one because the deal was so good…

Updated information for Q1 2024. @gasdoc is rolling in his grave seeing EV as less than 10% share, but all these EV leases taking every extra penny of subventions and discounts.

There are no situations in today’s market where financing or paying cash for an EV makes sense over leasing.

And if those cases exist, better be off buying lightly used EVs.

Can’t wait for a lot of these to hit that $25k mark for the extra tax credit

Nobody in their right mid would buy a new EV today.

Judging by some postings on leaseswap, the demographic is people who can’t do math. :joy:

At a certain income level people are willing to overpay for convenience. And then there’s our lovely tax code…

I’m in a high income demographic and I’m the cheapest SOB you’ve ever met. :grinning:

But you’d be surprised at who drives a Por-shaaa. I’m talking the base Macans and Cayennes, not the GT3s. It people who can barely swing a payment but need to drive the badge. See also 3-series BMWs and C-class Mercedes drivers.

Ya these numbers are prob heavily skewed by macans. Don’t think many folks are leasing 911s

Any time I see someone in a base Macan I want to jump out and ask Whyyyyy???

None of this surprises me, including the flip side of many high earners driving really plebeian cars.

The 3-series and C-class in your example got replaced by even cheaper, way less luxurious badge jobs like the first gen X1.

or the 2 series (SEDAN)/a class…

I have yet to see a compelling reason to buy either…That being said, if they ever brought the B class over

Yep. Great example is a couple I know. They’re both specialist physicians. Easily $700k income maybe more? He drives a Subaru Outback. She drives a Highlander.

However for them and others like them it’s always the highest trim level available for the plebeian cars. So they’re not necessarily cheap. A fully loaded Highlander can be $60k. They just don’t scream look at me.

wow the meme about Dodge Charger drivers being on 90-month financed terms at 21% apr may actually be true.

The ironic thing is, the entry level 3-series of prior models (E46 325i, E90 328i, etc) was an RWD platform with a longitudinal six upfront. That was way more of a drivers car than the FWD platform, transverse four X1.

Maybe it’s the result of OEMs listening to the badge chasers who complained their cars didn’t handle well in the snow on stock tires.

Well, for me, I drive a 3-series BMW because of my preference. I prefer small sedan, coupe or hatchback. 3 series BMW & C-series is the largest I want for my dd. My dream dd will be ev Benz GT in hard top convertible.
