Appliance HACKR

if you think samsung is bad just wait, JUST WAIT, until you deal with LG’s customer support.

already off to a good start here…

while parts are readily available I don’t believe GE makes any front loader appliances in the USA. according to this:

https://www.geappliances.com/appliances/washers-made-in-america/

says who, consumer reports? you honestly can’t trust them when it comes to appliances. that’s how i and many others ended up with samsung and lg refrigerators and washing machines.

I have a front load Samsung washer I bought during Black Friday 2011, moved across county, never malfunctioned and never any mold issues*

I had the matching gas dryer for almost 7 years, which was solid until the last month when clothes were not drying as well anymore, replaced with a Samsung electric almost 5 years ago, no issues.

I’ve had a Samsung fridge for about 4 years, no issues.

After the Rev. Jane H. rear-ended my WRX on the way home from giving blood, anytime my WRX was in a garage the trunk was open because after 3 repairs it still smelled like paint and collected moisture. My first lease was most gratifying the day I disposed of it.

With all do respect, the one thing that’s exhausting about appliance research is too many anecdotes of “Price doesn’t matter, get the best” or “Don’t get this brand”. Which has only told me so far “Speed Queen good, Samsung Bad”. Point taken, I’m not getting a Samsung.

I understand appliances are one of those things where if it works, you hear nothing because its doing its job, but you’ll hear endlessly about if things don’t work. There’s still middle ground appliances - Not every Speed Queen is a 25 year reliability monster, just like not every LG, GE or Samsung will break down and have horrid customer service. The LG and GE models I’ve listed seem to be the best rated across the board with only minimal negative reviews and overall good reliability. I’ve spoken to my local appliance store about customer service and support, to which they’ve told me part availability is plentiful for these models and they’re easy enough to fix. They themselves have certified technicians.

By your own advice, reading every negative review I can about products doesn’t even shift me towards Speed Queen more. I’ve consistently read the TC5 is rough on clothes, they’re not water efficient, they have low capacity and the TR and FF lines have overall checkered reliability. So basically find a Speed Queen from 10 years ago or only get the TC5, where I’m carting my comforter to the laundromat. Point taken and I will consider this as an option.

I’d love to outfit my new house with the most reliable, best functioning appliances out there, but that costs money and everyone has a budget. I’m looking for 2nd place lol

I got my TV from this website and the process was very smooth. Paid about $1100 less than Costco would have been.

Seems like margins are very thin on kitchen appliances. I am looking for a new range and didn’t find the discounts anywhere close to what I got on the TV.

Some of the items on here are over priced.

Agreed, TV price was amazing but I haven’t seen too much else.

People don’t go on the internet to praise products and services, but more so to complain.

The Maytag model that gets raving reviews is the MVWP575GW. A Speed Queen TC5 competitor (commercial construction for home use) that’s no longer sold new. I’m pretty confident that washer alone is the only recent one keeping their brand name high, because the replacement model isn’t well reviewed. The front loaders on the MHW line are just “okay” overall. No fancy features like Ultrafresh to prevent mold or Turbowash, just a modern decent front loader. But people have reported a number of issues with leaking, circuit errors and hard to access filters (shares on whirlpool models). The silver lining to Maytag and Whirlpool is customer service.

I actually haven’t read consumer reports for much since you have to pay for it.

I have a pretty low-end Kenmore (mfd by Whirlpool) set from 2004 that’s still going strong.

I believe I’ve only replaced a filler valve on the washer, aside from that they just ably do the job when asked.

If you divided all of the options available at the time into three price groups, this was probably on the higher end of the lowest third. No regrets.

I’ve purchased another set since then for a different place, and we went too far up the complexity (and cost) scale.

They look good as far as laundry appliances are concerned and so far they’ve been reliable, but I know that any meaningful repair is going to include electronics, screens, etc., and I really wish we’d aimed lower.

We really don’t need 163 different wash cycles and a dryer that spews jets of steam on demand.

They don’t make machines like that anymore. Pray for parts availability as it will last forever with only minor issues as did a Kenmore set we had forever.

Kenmore is amazing . Lasted us 12 years and died last week :smiling_face_with_tear::smiling_face_with_tear:

Sadly no more sears either

The guy who did the repair told me to keep putting parts into it for as long as I can find them.

I still think the simplicity of the lower-end machines has appeal, and that’s where the better values are long-term.

If the options now consist of mainly/only bad choices, I’d rather have a POS without screens and CPUs.

Yes, he’s right.

So even without a digital setup they all have boards. On our last Kemore washer we had a board go out and I bought 3 @ $150 each. Sold the other two 5 and 7 years later for $400 and $500 on ebay when they were no longer available. Did the same thing with a Kitchenaid board from a double oven ($320/$850).

Who knew that so many people beyond me would pay that for parts?

We have a top load LG we got from Lowes about 2.5 years ago with some discounted Lowes gift cards that go on sale periodically. We bought a lowes extended warranty also, and recently had to use it to replace a drip post-washing that ended up being an inlet valve. Pretty crappy that this thing went bad after 2.5 years. Interesting thing was that Lowes dispatched an LG repairman, not some contracted repairman. And their extended warranty people were really easy to deal with.

We do miss the agitator we had with our GE washer, but that one only lasted 5 years and capacity was not great. Next one might just be SQ, it’s worth extra money not to have to deal with repairs and buying new units all the time.

I believe this is the same problem I described above, but it took my Kenmore (by Whirlpool) ~16 years before that happened.

well i also said don’t get an LG but that’s neither here nor there. you preface this like you feel i’m going to be insulted in some way. i’m just a schmuck on the internet. there are plenty of people who will tell you to buy samsung and lg and you’ll be happy with them. fact is, you very well may. i only give my extensive experience, you do what you want with the information i provide.

very true.

ok, so buy one and get it over with. you seem to have your mind made up and i don’t know why you’re belaboring the issue at this point.

you can easily test that by calling your local LG repair center and asking if they have all parts in stock and if not how long it would take to get them. if you’re willing to believe an appliance salesman about anything i’m honestly not sure what help the internet would be able to give you.

ok so get the LG or the foreign made GE. it basically is what it is at this point. whatever you do, get the extended warranty!

this is the maytag commerical unit i owned. when it died on me within the month i ended up being told that this is, in fact, not a “commercial” unit in any way that has to do with parts, but is basically a rebadged consumer unit made to look like a commercial unit with extra cycle settings and the stainless tub. i’m not sure if that’s still the case (i don’t remember claims of a .5hp motor) as i had mine at the end of 2019.

a few models floating around out there so i’m not sure why you’re saying its not available?

Speedqueen is second to none.

Family has been in this space for years.

I used to take the hand me down coin op machines and put them on free start in the home.

So homeless. But always a good story when people came over.

I’m not fixated on those. I’m quite open actually. I’m waiting for any recommendation that’s <$2k for a set and will wash a king comforter. Or any hacks that could bring the price down of higher priced sets.

I’ve looked into the Maytag a lot as I thought I found a winner… it was a bluff unfortunately.

The Lowe’s link you sent is to the 576KW, which is the big box version. Key difference is it only comes with a 1 year warranty. Not to mention it’s out of stock

The Home Depot link you sent is the 585GW, which is the mentioned re-badged consumer unit.

The Appliance direct link you sent is the real one, but it’s out of stock when you actually try to add to cart. I called and they said their website isn’t updated.

I’m not sure which version you had and it sucks because they all look identical, but the good one has been elusive. A few scratch and dent ones on the east coast, but shipping cost would kill the savings.

Try https://www.greentoe.com/

Have used several times and saved thousands over any online/local retailer.

You bid and authorized retailers can accept or counter. Prices are out the door w/shipping/tax/etc and include all warranties and you can file for all rebates, etc. Bid low, not too low as some dealers may not counter, but trick is to receive close counter offer.

should have posted that, already did this before post. Discount is usually less than trade discount - usually 8-9% on appliances like this. The key is finding the companies that engage with GT and bypass GT
