Am I Stupid? Used BMW M8 or M850i

Is this a dumb dumb move?

I’ve fallen completely in love with the 8 series (M850i or M8) in the 4 door (gran coupe) version.

the prices are falling fast on them and I could snag a low mileage (sub 30k) model for $65-$80k and still within warranty. I’d spend a few grand to extend the warranty a few more years.

I’m happy to pay cash for one.. put about 50k miles on it over 4 years, and resell it.

my back of napkin math (using Depreciation curves from CarEdge) suggests the 4 year cost (standard Maintenance, premium fuel) coupled with recapture at depreciated resale.. is roughly $40k in total cost over those 48mo.

Make any sense to anyone? lol.

M Lite unless you’re gonna track it..but V8 either way so who cares lol

Yeah I’m leaning towards the M-lite for that reason.. and the more comfortable ride.

I have a M850 GC (leased, retired loaner) and absolutely love it, go for it. It’s very comfortable and handles really well for how big and heavy it is, engine and sound is amazing. Coming from a m340, people said it wouldn’t handle as well, but it handles better imo. Bonus: my wife likes it alot more and said its much smoother than the m340. I’ve had no issues in my short time with it but wouldnt risk being out of warranty. Have you priced out extended?

Heck yeah. Glad to hear it ! It’s such a rare car to find on the road too.

Not yet on the warranty.. I’m assuming it’s the same cost as my X7 warranty extension with BMW (5-6k). Honestly the interior of the M850 looks just like the interior on my wife’s X7.. which is pretty damn luxurious.

Yes you are stupid. Go for a M Sport 840i and stick with the B58 motor.

For daily go m850. The M8 rides very harsh because it has to handle for its size. It was one of the firmest rides for a grand tourer ive owned.

Not enough power for a heavy car

Absolutely not. Going pre-owned the price difference between an 840 and m850 is a no brainer to go with the N63 TT V8

Used 2021-2024 M850i allday road warrior. (Any BMW certified mechanic full inspection can share) You can Carbahn tune this sleeper to M8 comp specs, tunable suspension, silly power increases without cutting a single wire and run with a full warranty.

I thought the N63 motor isn’t so bulletproof?

Damn I’m pumped! Love to hear that. Thanks

That’s for the older (sub 2021) engines apparently.

The 2020+ cars that have the 523 hp are tanks. Many are tuned with downpipes on e85 and are strong. The ZF transmission is bulletproof also.

I also have a m850 GC 2025, retired loaner. (Ty @SteveB25 ). Only had it out a handful of times due to work and weather (will drive it a lot more in a few weeks!) 0 regrets! I love the car and shame its being discontinued. Get the warranty and enjoy it in good health. I love downshiftig in it and hearing the pops!

Yeah I wasn’t worried about the ZF. I’ll be honest, I was looking at the 840i given the whole 8 series platform has heavy depreciation. If the N63s are solid and the TCO is comparable, then I was stupid for saying Ricky Bobby was stupid and would like to formally apologize.

I have a 2 door M850 and I love it. It handles so well and you can really feel all of the power. It’s a great daily. Mine is xDrive with winter tires and it handles the snow better than my silverado lol

All good. I thought the same thing about the V8 until I dug a little deeper. You’re a gentleman for apologizing, but I get it.

You’re not dumb. Just don’t own it even 1 minute out of warranty.
