Am I Stupid? Used BMW M8 or M850i

Not a current owner of an 8 series but I had an M8 in 2020 for about 9 months and loved the car and the feel. The suspension was not too brutal, very balanced. But then I went from an M3CS to the M8.

Currently own a 2022 M550 which has the same engine as the M850. I leased it in 2021 and bought it out to keep it long term. That engine and transmission combo is a match made in heaven. Insane power when you need it and classy drive when your cruising. The perfect sleeper.

Definitely invest in the Extended Warranty and only the BMW Platinum one. You dont need to purchase it till 1 week before factory warranty is expiring ( BMW is very strict in order to sell you the BMW Platinum)

Go for it dude. Ur not stupid, U will look at this thread in 4 or 5 years and thank us all !

Disclaimer about warranty: Thankfully I have not had to use it yet but I bought it only for my peace of mind as a lot of folks here and on bimmer post had recommended / or based on my research about the V8’s. Plus my biggest supporter was my BMW service advisor friend of almost 10 years. (no i didnt purchase the warrnaty from him lol)

did you shop the warranty at different dealers?

I currently have a M8GC love the car but the coolant expansion tank on the S63 and the N63 is plastic and directly above the injectors and it will leak into the injectors causing failure. When purchasing one, factor in the cost to make it an aluminum tank or get a relocation kit. Ive gone through two plastic ones in the 23k miles I’ve had the car (all replaced under warranty)

That’s a great tip. I’ll look at the cost of that.

The BMW BONG BONG BONG BONG of death

BMW quality is better than merc but nothing touches old school Lexus products – but the BMW is highly enjoyable over 80 mph

Yes you have to.

Guys.. why is this price too good to be true?

2025 m850i. Low miles. $73k

This dealer always has a ton of high value used cars from brands they generally have no business stocking, often at prices a lot cheaper than others. Something about them is shady to me, but I have no evidence or backing for that. Just make sure you look at the car in person and have it inspected by a BMW dealer prior to purchase

Great advice on having BMW inspect it.

They sent me the carfax. Looks like the car had one owner in the local area. No accidents.

It is very suspicious why a Kia dealer has so many luxury cars on inventory

Here’s an article on why they have so many…
Honestly very interesting. What you think?

Crazy they do that much volume of these cars where so many folks recognize it. Very interesting , wonder how Kia feels about it. Kinda funny rolling up to a Kia dealer looking at a McLaren

The problem with these “exotic/luxury car” dealers that are badged by lower end brands like Mitsubishi or Kia is that they’re really using the brand to get access to their financial services whether it’s floorplan or consumer financing. Also, the dealerships aren’t exactly knowledgeable when it comes to cars much less exotics/high end and they may not have the tools to diagnose the cars before they get them in via trade or auction. Look how dumb your typical dealership is and then realize that these guys are most likely even dumber. I’ve heard stories of these dealerships not realizing a Porsche was repainted for example.

My biggest question is how is this dealer selling this car at $10k below KBB ???

KBB is useless and irrelevant. They got it cheap at auction or on trade or are taking a loss

Okay.. I see some concerns now.

At 8,000 miles the car had the following done;

  • Maintenance inspection completed
  • Axles checked
  • Control arm(s) replaced
  • Four wheel alignment performed
  • Front strut(s) replaced
  • Steering gear replaced

Looks like a few major components replaced.

Easy pass on this one, sounds like an undercarriage hit and might even have been self-insured car someone took to auction if the car fax shows auction sale.

Might be.

Carfax doesn’t show any damage and the components were replaced at the local BMW dealer.

But you’re saying.. if they don’t make an insurance claim, carfax won’t know there was an accident. ?

I know the ownership at Kia of Riverdale, they’re pretty legit. I work with the management team at one of their other franchise stores

Yeah, the car could be fine as long as the repairs were done right. Get an independent PPI if you like the car.

And generally, yes on Carfax/Autocheck, they only know if something gets reported to the sources they pick up their data from. I’m not saying malicious was done to this car but the parts are highly unusual to be replaced at 8K miles without major damage.

Get an independent mechanic specializing in the brand to inspect it.

What you need to know is whether it was wrecked or shoddily repaired (every shady seller knows how to keep the history clean) or it’s simply mechanically failing even without a hit… that requires a good look under the hood and from beneath the car when it’s raised on a lift

A dealership inspection which mirrors their CPO checklist is useless for this purpose.
