2023 BMW M2 discussion

I see where you’re going, and agree, but never said they’re the same price at all.

Just stating that build for build you’re closing the gap. Even more so if you up the ante and check the Carbon Pack (which, why wouldn’t you as that’s essentially the aura of an M2, right?).

At sub $5k or even possibly sub $10k difference, there’s no denying the M3 is a whole lot ‘more’ car. Especially considering you get 2 extra doors little to no weight savings.

To each their own, of course. Just my 2c from a value prop.

I get that it is an M car so an aspirational purchase but adding 20-25% of base MSRP worth of options never going to give you good value on any car. You can easily spec a G80 up to high $90k range that way. To me the appeal of the G87 is that I am getting the same hardware as the G80 at a significant discount as long as I don’t spec the carbon bits that do not change the way the car drives in a noticeable way. And admittedly subjectively, I prefer the exterior design of the G87 over the G80…

If you don’t need 4 doors, the performance of the M2 will be close enough to the M3/M4 for most buyers unless you’re going xDrive.

Same dilemma as M240i vs. M340i (i’d argue the 330i buyers care more about practicality). Pricing is about $5k apart (off the top of my head) and weight is very similar.

If you want something fast and fun, the M2 is going to let you do that for a lot less than a comparable M3. The car I really see getting impacted are the RWD versions of the M4.

M2 can save a lot weight with the right options and some aftermarket love.

M2 has the sunroof standard (40-50lbs heavier than carbon) and heavy cast wheels instead of forged.

Option the carbon roof, get some aftermarket forged wheels like apex or Titan 7 and a lithium battery from antigravity batteries and you’ve shaved off 100lbs+. I think we’ll see the aftermarket do a lot for this generation.

US configurator is up, any value in carbon package for resale?

I feel like the CF roof might be the biggest value for resale. I ordered mine without it but I may go back and change it.

Why do you think that?

If it’s reselling back to a dealer or third party then I guess it won’t really matter and whatever options keep you at lowest MSRP is probably best.

But I think a lot of people are unhappy that sunroofs are standard for tracking purposes or just dislike sunroofs in general. I know I would rather have the CF roof as well.

Carbon Package is nice if you’re keeping it or want to sell it private party - buyers will probably want the cf roof, trim, bucket seats and higher speed limit but for a flip I’d avoid it and maybe just option the $2600 cf roof.

I would avoid all of the carbon unless you are committed to selling private party yourself. Dealer or online will probably give you more for a sunroof to be honest. I think the interest in this car will maybe make a private party sale easier, but they are still a pain in general.

I love this delusion where people act like a 50 lb roof is somehow going to change the car from a track perspective for the 2 times in the cars life they take it to a track.

Or that a sunroof is like heinous when you can’t even tell it’s a sunroof with the shade closed.

Reminds me of a dude laughing about the stupidity of someone who bought an E92 with a sunroof and missed out on the CF roof.

The dude drove an E46 M3 convertible

A sunroof greatly reducing the headroom in the car. In the F87 it was around 1.75in. If you are over 6ft and plan to do some track days, carbon roof is a must for helmet room. Nothing more annoying than your helmet grazing the roof liner and banging off it over bumps. The weight savings is just a bonus and happens to be removing it from the highest point in the car. Ideally BMWusa would have made steel roof standard like the EU market and made sunroof an option, with a lower msrp.

I still say it’s a pretty small point relative to the amount of times it’s discussed if you look at data for how many times in these cars lives people actually take them to the track.

Ya if you’re a 6 4 dude trying to track a tiny car you may need to make some sacrifices. Most of us aren’t so fortunate

I’m 6’2" my helmet hit the roof in F87 M2 with sunroof. Something to think about if people are going to do HPDE or attend some BMWCCA events. Even some shorter people with longer torsos can have issues fitting.

I honestly wouldn’t even buy a M2 if you don’t plan on tracking it on occasional, it is what the car is designed to do. The new M240i is plenty of car for streets and arguably the better looking car.

I think in general on the 2nd hand market, you would have to find an enthusiast to pay extra for CF.

So speccing the car, just get what you like. Id get the sunroof, makes for a better daily, which this car will most likely be use for. But being tall with a helmet sucks in any sports car without bucket style seats.

If you are flipping, I would option as little as possible. Maybe lighting pack and hud.(but I wouldn’t advise flipping these unless you are getting a real early allocation).

Keeping long term, carbon roof will get its value back in second hand market for sure. Slicktop M cars always pull more money.
