True. The GS is dead, the RC is about to be, the LS & IS are on life support and everything else is based on a US or global Toyota platform (UX, NX, RX, ES, GX, LX). Then there’s the LC. Cool car, but I don’t see it making it to a gen 2 either.
Is in a class if its own.even the 7 series & A8s have a hard time competing with it
Lexus has been falling off as well but for a long time it was a real contender but just like everything in Toyota land, refreshes started falling behind the other luxury brands.
So this was like 20 yrs ago then?
I totally agree that there used to be a group of people who wanted understated luxury maybe 20-40 yrs. I think all of those people died, leaving us w/ the bling-tastic luxury we have today.
I also read somewhere (maybe even from a journalist) that the European definition of “luxury” has changed. The word used to imply “well made” (if spartan). Now…
I myself like understated luxury. But I think I’m more likely to look for that in a Lincoln than in an Acura. And, at $800/mo for a Corsair Reserve, I ain’t gonna be looking at Lincoln anytime soon! ::snort::
To be fair, the RX and ES at least (cosmetically) mask the donor platform very well and have bulletproof reliability ratings. I think ES and RX buyers want a car that’s reasonably luxurious, not insanely expensive to maintain, and will run forever. That’s exactly what those 2 models provide, and there’s not a lot of cars that meet those criteria anymore…
Yes, dot com startup.
I think the issue is that Lexus got this market cornered and there are not enough of these people to support Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti.
I think the real issue is that BMW, MB & to some level Audi were started off as luxury as the main goal as compared to Acura & others were started as “upscaled” luxury brands. It was like they jumped in with half-pregnant mindset (i know it’s an oxymoron)
I regret ever selling my 94 integra.
I know I’m going to be disappointed, but I have high hopes for this.
Im fully expecting it to be a ‘22 Civic based next gen ILX and frankly that’s not so bad since I rather like the new Civic. If it has good content and is priced right, it would make for a pretty decent (and perhaps more reliable) alternative to an A3, A220 or M235i. Maybe it will lease well!
Stupid move IMO
First of all, how is it going to be the only odd-ball with a name badge when everything else is _ _ X
Secondly, you just can’t replicate or make better the timeless first gen. From the clean simple styling to the way it drove.
And third, Honda already has the Civic Type R, there’s no need for the another blast from the past to tickle the Fanboys. They’re not buying CTR’s and they’re not buying old Integra’s to restore.
Sincerely,
A Honda Fanboy
(2 Accords, S2K, Civic, MDX, HRV, CRV, and currently Odyssey)
Cuz they are … back when they introduced the _ _X naming convention that’s what was “IN” now it’s about re-inroducing “old” name plates …
Who knows? Maybe the TLX will get re-named “Legend.” Lincoln moved over their naming scheme pretty quickly (and the Navigator never had a goofy triple letter name).
IMO, a big challenge for Acura is just how good normal, mainstream cars have gotten, Hondas included.
Back in the early-2000s, Acura sold lots of tarted-up Accords and Pilots (3.2 TL and MDX) with leather interior, power everything, and fake wood. The extra value and features you got from an Acura over a Honda were very tangible. It was the rational person’s luxury car.
Now, Hyundais and Kias have panoramic sunroofs and quilted leather seats in the quest to stand out and be premium. Luxury brands need to have strong branding and design, and an emotion quotient, to be relevant. I feel like Acura has been trying with the TLX, flattening and stretching it to look like a RWD car and giving it double wishbones up front, but it still feels so… Honda.
At least going back to “Integra” gives them some historical relevance and cred, since cars from the 90s are back. I guess Integra is to Civic Type R the way the S3 is to Golf R.
True. With the 1st Gen TLX debacle it lost the differentiator, there was no added power or luxury & the beak didn’t help.
Funny thing is they could have gotten ahead of the curve when they introduced the “turbo” on RDX but failed to refine it & move it to TLX or MDX.
And eventually they just got lost in oblivion.
i.e. - would gladly spend $$ for a palisade or telluride over MDX
P.S. - i feel like deja Vu of TLX Type-S thread discussion.
Yup, it’s the exact same discussion. Acura talks a big game then comes out and shows how out of touch with reality they are and delivers an underwhelming product.
It’s different strokes for different folks. Some brands want to court serial lessees. Some brands want to court people who hold a car past its warranty.
Also not sure if this was mentioned in the TLX hate fest before I ignored it but the Type S is priced, as a purchase, to compete against a 330i not a 340i.
exacto!
Why anyone would choose this over the Civic is beyond my understanding.
Genesis is going to eat Acura’s lunch and not even burp…

Tell that to Acura…
“Acura says that the Audi S4 and BMW M340i are the TLX Type S’s closest competitors”
I find it funny that it actually said
“The V-6–powered Type S starts at $53,325, which is around $13,000 more than a four-cylinder TLX with all-wheel drive.”
While the 330i is definitely not worth it, an M-Sport MSRPs between 47k and 53k. Definitely
Spitting range of the Type S.
I’ve seen M340s well above 62k.
The type S is closer to the Stinger GT2 and G70 than anything else.
