Sure, a 30-minute ride is one thing. What about a 2-3 hour drive somewhere and then home in the evening? And at least a bit of space for some “stuff”?
2005 Legacy GT wagon is ok for interior space and trunk space, but getting old… 2018 STI is fine for space, but want a sporty auto.
I know, I’m picky. I can be - current car is still running, and there’s no pressure to buy anything…
I was comparing vehicles by the type, I couldn’t careless what chassis or motor is being used across makes. A Golf R Hatch compared to a Sedan? maybe equivalent power plant or chassis but we can’t compare price when talking about 2 completely different types of cares.
So if the ES350, Camry and the Avalon are on the same platform, TNGA, then when I compared the ES350 to the Avalon, that would be true. I think the ES350 has more technical advancements and better astetics then the Camry so I compare it to the new Avalon for sure.
I think it’s a farcry to call them two “completely” different types of cars considering that both fit in the segment with similar mechanical components. The only significant difference objectively is the hatch versus trunk.
Same conversation between a Jetta on the MQB platform and a GTI on the MQB platform with same engine/transmission. Would you preclude the Jetta from being similar to the GTI simply for the presence of a hatch?
Also, S3s new can be had with similar equipment as the Golf R can at a very similar price. I think the S3 is maybe 2 or 3k more than the Golf R in that respect. The S3 can also be optioned with the suite of Audi tech which balloons the price up to the 50’s, in which case I would just get a Premium Plus S4.
The ES350 moved from being a glorified Camry to a glorified Avalon with the 2012 model year. Before that, it was Camry-based, and from 2012 and forward, it’s Avalon-based. It grew substantially when the XV60 (6th generation) came out. While the Camry may be on the same platform, it is NOT the same car. For reference, the Subaru Crosstrek, Forester, and Ascent all share the same platform, but are obviously different cars. The ES and the Avalon, however, are the same car.
More and more manufacturers have been moving towards a modular architecture approach with new generation cars. This allows them to use the same base chasis and simply extend, widen, shorten, whatever in order to fit the necessary drive trains and engines to meet multiple purposes. A jack of all trades approach, if you will. Definitely simplifies and brings down costs on the manufacturing side of things to simplify tooling and logistics.
You don’t have to care, but I am just offering an explanation to their reaction. If you don’t understand the other person you will not make much progress.
Because this is not the 80s. Business has changed and if you want to make a dent in the market you have to either offer something in a way no one has seen like Tesla did or be aggressive with pricing. That is exactly the point, they are not every other brand, they are new and can’t expect to be treated to the same market traditions that others enjoy. Do I expect the new 3 series to get discounts yet? No, its a new 3 series, that car has history behind it. They can’t seriously think people will pay more for these cars when they sit next to Sonatas and Elantras at the dealer either.
Cars are slowly trickling into the market right now. If they took it seriously, I’d imagine there’d be a few more on lots waiting to be sold. I think Genesis is being very conservative with their approach to selling their vehicles. High prices (I consider G70 and G80 prices to be high for a newcomer brand not offering anything revolutionary in their segments), low inventory, almost feels as if they’re trying to feel the market out to see how it reacts. I think 2 years of being on the market is way too soon to determine how successful they’ll be in the long run. We will know in 6 to 10 years time if their approach is working.
q50 is based on the FM platform…same architecture as the g37, 370z and gtr. All of them are slightly modded depending on the model but they all start in rwd or awd. The new vr30 engine is unique to only the q50/q60.
the FM was pretty advanced when it came out so its still competitive…puting around town i dont think anyone can notice. most people would prefer just to get the 10-12k off anyways.
rumor is the next platform will be hybrid or electric drive train based.
