2018 Volkswagen Passat GT

Test drove a Passat GT the other day and really liked it. This model is on it’s way out so I was thinking I might get a good deal. I want a 36 month lease with 15k miles a year, no money down, and as low a monthly payment as I can get.

I asked the salesperson to send me the MF, residual, and best price they could do and she texted me this pic of a printout. What should my response be? This seems super expensive. (I have never leased a car before but have excellent credit.)

MSRP - 30,360
Adjusted Price - 27,160
Closing Fee - 399
IMF - 500
Non Tax Fees - 799
Total - 28,808
MF - .00065
Residual - 14,573
$437/month w/$0 down, 36 months, 15k miles/year.

That money factor isn’t bad and I’m not entirely sure a dealer will do a steeper discount on that, VW invoice pricing is notorious for having almost no margin for movement.

With that being said, while I realize you’re doing a 15k mile a year lease, in my opinion, 437 a month for an outgoing Passat is absolutely terrible. It might just not lease well.

27k for what you get isn’t bad, probably better financed, than leased. I just don’t see the value in spending 437 a month on it when Q50’s are flying out the door for 100 bucks less a month on an aging platform, as well.

There should be a lot more discount than 3200, I see these advertised for as low as 23XXX
If you go to cars.com and search the whole country, sort by lowest price… Not sure if 23xxx reflects rebates you dont qualify for, but I you should be able to get close to 18-20% discount on a sales price…Its a great car, we have a passat in a family and I love it, but to me its more of a sub 300 0 das car 437 can get you a bmw/infiniti/acura/mercedes lexus etc…

I’ve researched and owned VW in the past. One trend I’ve noticed with doing national searches for VW cars is they stack all incentives and remove things like “freight” and destination charges from the steepest discounted VWs.

If it’s advertised as 23k, I’d add 2 to 3k to that price and it’d be more realistic. Still, I think it’s plausible for OP to get it at a selling price of around 25.5k or 25k even, if he is patient enough.

I have three VW dealers currently blowing up my phone for the past 8 weeks trying to sell me a GTI I no longer want, so I know they’re desperate for sales.

Thanks for the replies. For what it’s worth, there is no way I’d sign this deal. I was thinking $300/month would be ideal given 15k mileage. I’d go a bit higher but no way it’s worth more than $350 a month. Financing might be the better option.

You’re just not going to get a great lease deal on anything with a 48% residual and no incentives/rebates. Look elsewhere.

To those that suggest financing a Passat, I urge you to look at what a 3-4 year old Passat is worth…

OP, if you like the Passat GT, look at the R-Line with lighting package. Basically the same thing as the GT sans the V6 engine and slight different suspension.

The GT is not going to lease well. I’d wait until next month and you should be able to lease a R-Line with Lighting for around $260-275 a month on a sign and drive. Pretty sure VW will have end of year money on the table. Someone leased a Passat not too long and got it to $240ish and this was on a SE too

Agree with Stinger, aint paying $437 a month for a V6 Passat.

fyi, Im currently leasing a 2016 R-Line with Lighting and actually still like it. Have another 6 months left on the lease.

You can spend $600 and get the turbo 4 tuned/chipped. That puppy will churn out close to 300lbs of torque. Ask me how I know… :sunglasses:

They are selling these for 22,000 in our area. MF is also inflated! It should be 0.00001.

Financing a Passat is definitely not the way to go. Especially since this body style has been around since 2011. It’s not going to be worth much after a few years. I’m currently leasing a 2017 Passat R Line for $250 a month with zero down for 36 months, 15K miles a year. I qualified for the loyalty rebate as well as college grade rebate. However, even without those, you still have some room to negotiate for the GT. A bunch of dealers have them advertised for 23-25K in NJ. I love the GT but I’m afraid it won’t be around by the time I’m through with this lease (13 more months to go!) Hopefully, the Arteon will be out by that time!!!

Wait for the arteon to come out … :sweat_drops::sweat_drops:

Don’t worry, it will. The refreshed Passat continues on the same, aged platform and apparently will con’t w/ the same engine/transmission combo (per Car and Driver).

Since that car replaces the CC, it presumably will cost $35,000+.

Does that matter as much if someone keeps it for 6+ yrs (since the warranty is 6 yr/72000 mi)?

The Arteon will have power and AWD as well as a V6. I’m upset at the guy who got zero down on a Passat and 250 a mo,.,. Way better deal than mine. I loved my Passat that R-line in black is a dime. Since I love the look of the arteon I decided to wait aprox 3 years from now and will look into leasing it then when there should be rebates on it. So I suppose I’m stuck with a Mazda 6 for now… picking it up tomorrow but I anticipate it to be an enjoyable transition going from a bare R line to a loaded Mazda 6 GTR. Which I might add leased way better than the Passat in full comparison. The difference in options and monthly price is almost unbelievable. That’s a good mindset to have in regard to warranty and being covered. But do you want to risk using your warranty over and over when small things start breaking down. Being covered is nice but in the shop is not. I’m afraid to know what 50k maintenance is needed on a Passat. Let’s not forget about those expensive AF continentals they have on them,. Or mine at least. About 210 a piece …

yup, i got about a year left on my R Line lease then I’m giving it right back to the dealer…i definitely don’t want to deal with any maintenance issues since I’m already going to be returning the car at 45,000 miles…and new jersey roads have been very unforgiving to my rims and tires…those 19 inch Salvador rims look great but the potholes and crappy roads make for a pretty rough ride…i’ve already replaced 2 tires on my passat. but i called Continental and complained that i had to replace the tires within 1 year of leasing the car so they gave me two tires for the price of one…I love the look of the Arteon as well but I’m 100% sure I won’t be able to get it for what I pay now ($250 a month) with zero down. =/

I wouldn’t mind paying low 4s for it tho

Arteon will have a 2.0T, not a V6.

No V6 on the Arteon. It will get the 2.0T in the Atlas.

Honestly… that car has been delayed so much for a US launch that I’d be surprised if VW committed to actually selling it here.

With an economic down turn and mid-size mass market sedan sales in near free-fall in the US, it just won’t make sense to launch a non-premium fast-back. VW didn’t even bring the 2020 Passat to the MQB platform, electing to retain the aging NMS hardware over a full-blown update to keep costs down and milk what little sales the market has to offer.

I’m pretty sure future Passats won’t even offer a V6 and definitely no TDI. At least they updated the Jetta to MQB.

Oh my lord. I just read an article about the arteon and I guess your saying it’s a 278 horse power 4 banger? And starting at 35k up to mid 40s for a nicely equipped one. Your probably better off getting an Audi Sportback,. After my Mazda 6 GTR lease is up (Just got it yesterday and in absolute love) I plan to look at cars such as the Guilia, Audi A5 ad below, Stelvio maybe… mx5 if they add the turbo… maybe the stinger leases will be better. But my question is to those who are excellent in predicting these economic shifts and prices concocted resultant could tell me where the deals may be ? It’s a little better for me in 3 years because I’ll be over 25 and I would have gotten a stelvio for 350 a mo zero down but the insurance was 180… what a boner killer.

VW will have to price the Arteon out of its own market in order to turn a reasonable profit on it. I honestly do not see them importing it to the States. A well equipped Arteon will be most likely be around the same price of a base A5 Sportback or Stinger GT1. Not entirely sure the market can sustain one unless you can pick up an Arteon with the virtual cockpit for around 40k. The CC was able to be sold for a while at around 35k because it shared platforms and engines with the B6 Passat… I mean they even used the first generation EA888 TSI motor in it for 10 years and with only one mid-cycle refresh and no real upgrades I’m not surprised sales tapered off.

For the OP, if they want an NMS Passat with a V6, the GT is definitely the way to go. I don’t see the V6 being used in future mid-size sedan platforms.

So currently in your opinion which mid size sedan is dominating ?
