WWLHD: Want an XC60, but moving cross-country in 16 months

Hello (and thanks in advance for any help / thoughts)! I’m in NJ and want an XC60 because of the combo of safety + size + features. Would prefer to lease (given I want a new car every 2-3 years), but open to buying. However, I’m moving from NJ to CA in Jan 2026, so it’s an awkward lease length. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do (buy, rent, other)?

24 months lease with 6 months pull-ahead. That is if you want another Volvo. Don’t buy a Volvo.

Thanks! Why do you say not to buy one, if that’s simple to convey?

I know @max_g doesnt like the XC60s, but not sure he’s recommended good alternatives.

It’s much more instructive to think of cars like stocks and bonds: instead of good and bad, define them as overpriced or underpriced.

The XC60 is way overpriced for both lease and ownership (due to poor value retention).

What’s better that roughly satisfies the same criteria?

Sorry, maybe I missed something. Do you not want to ship or drive the car out to CA?

Another reason to not buy a Volvo is that score consistently low on reliability. But, if you’re leasing, who cares?

It’s a good car. He’s never had a Volvo, but did have an Infinity, I think

I’m open to driving it there, just adds a lot of mileage

Get a BMW SUV lease from Swapalease (must be dime dozen) and lease a Volvo in CA.

I would lease bmw x3, Lyric or Blazer EV, transfer the lease just before moving to LA then start a fresh lease in LA.

This but in NJ: an i4 or Blazer EV. Drive it, transfer it, lease fresh in CA.

Volvo’s aren’t especially reliable or known for value retention. I’ve leased two, I’d never own one out of warranty. They are also the hardest lease to dispose of if circumstances change before disposition.

While you mention “new” in your post honestly a CPO Volvo is one of the best value programs out there. Not sure if you’d be open to it or not. Certainly removes the mileage anxiety your previous comment alluded to.

I think you said earlier that safety was your top priority? If you define safety as Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+), then there’s not a ton of choices in that size segment that make much sense to buy or lease.

Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX50? The others are smaller or BEV.

If you go to midsize TSP+ then they are a size larger than the XC60, such as Pilot, CX90 and Telluride, etc.

Thanks all - have some reading to do. Did want to ask - would Care by Volvo make sense here? I know it’s deal dependent, but the flexible term seems like it’s worth looking into more

Historically CBV has not been a good value, except for the few months when it was. Can’t hurt to check.

Welp Volvo got back to me today: “As of 08/01/2024, Care by Volvo [h]as been officially terminated until further notice.”

If you want safe, try the xc90. They lease really well @aronchi carries them and are even safer than the xc60.

Unfortunately bigger than I’d like, but appreciate the recommendation

All of this XC60 hate is BS. It’s the best PHEV luxury two row on the market that leases well.

I love mine. Denim Blue Amber with air suspension

As someone who has one as a demo and sells them for a living, you are partially correct.

I can tell you I have lost tons of deals to the QX50. It is checks notes $250/mo cheaper.
