When the dealer asks you for quotes (from other dealers)

So, I’ve been working on a lease deal for the last couple of weeks and it looks like I’m getting closer. Some dealers are asking me to send them quotes from other dealers, as a proof that those other dealers have given me a better deal. I’ve already shared the details of the email communication but they want me to forward them the actual email exchange. I don’t really feel comfortable in doing so because they could simply call each other, for example, and start working against me. I would then loose both deals. Am I too paranoid? Is it ok to share? If not, what would be a somewhat polite way to get around this without upsetting the dealer? Thanks!

Yesterday I just asked a dealer to give me his best price on a lease, his response: “We don’t deal like that, my manager doesn’t give a best price, but we will match and beat, if we can, what other dealers are willing to do.” I will never call that salesman back if I can’t get a dealers best price from him, I will just find someone higher up willing to deal there.

In my opinion, if they can beat a price, they can beat it and they don’t need the confirmation. If they can’t beat it or are unwilling, then they won’t deal anyways even with confirmation. It doesn’t matter who or where it came from. I may play a little harder than most because I am not in a spot where I have to get a car at this point, just shopping until I find the right one for me. If you are tied to the dealer asking for confirmation, print it out and tell him you will bring it in if they are willing to match the numbers when you get there.

You don’t even need to send the whole thread, just the offer portion anyways, redact the unnecessary haggling portion if any.

100% share it if you want it beat.

99% of the time when someone says they have a better quote, they’re lying. the only way to get any management to budge and try and win the deal is if it’s in writing.

What if the price offered, without seeing the offer sheet, undercuts the other dealer by $1,000? If I show a sales person the offer from a competitor then what’s the incentive for any dealer to beat it by more than a few hundred dollars?

I personally have never said I have a better quote, I have asked for the dealer’s best quote and explain I have other offers on the table as well. If they can’t or won’t give me a quote unless they see what else I have in my binder I walk, it’s that simple. Now if there’s a particular dealer I like working with who is priced above another one, and I wanted to give them the business, I would show them the offer sheet/email/whatever.

Price collusion is illegal isn’t it?

Thank you all. I took a screenshot of the email exchange (after removing dealer info) and sent it to the competing dealer as a preview. I told them that if they can beat that deal I will pay them a visit and show them the full email.
