What's a good first car to lease with possible intention to buy it later on?

I’m trying to help my little sister get a car. She is still a student and needs reliable transport. Her goal is to lease for short time and when she gets a stable job to try to buy it out right or finance it. I’m thinking something with less residual and more room to discount would be better. Any suggestions? I saw 2019 Corolla and was thinking this may fit the bill.

That’s a terrible idea. It just means you are paying more deprecation during the lease.

A <$5K used camry or accord would fit the bill nicely

If she wants to buy it later on, leasing isn’t the best idea.

Something you can get massive discount and incentives on…

Like a loaner BMW…

…but it’ll eat you alive in maintenance down the line…

Yeah.

How about a Kia Optima? Text me, I can help you out with a deal. (323)574-3360

Anything by Honda. Most Kia’s will be worth less than buyout at lease end. Not the best decision.

Hondas retain their value pretty well, which means their projected RV is slightly lower than their real world RV. Can’t go wrong with and Accord or a Civic.

With that being said, leasing explicitly to buy is not a good idea. Just get a used Honda/Toyota?

The only time this makes sense is when the lease is more heavily subsidized than a purchase. It happens, but very rarely. Just buy a HonYotaZda now.

Very true.

If trunk cash on a car is $5,000 on a lease vs $3,000 on a retail sale then in most cases that’s worth leasing before buying unless the finance rate is 0 or significantly better than the lease rate.

Whichever Lexus model is leasing the cheapest? High residuals make for lower lease payments and good resale values and reliability make for a good long term ownership option. And if she has some savings she can put MSDs toward a deal.
