What would you buy for $10k?

Private party, private party, private party!

And:

PPI! PPI! PPI!

Honestly, there’s no way I would shell out 10 grand for a 10yr old Civic with 100K miles.

Maybe a 5-6yr old Civic for $10K but not 10yrs old. Better off buying a brand spanking new one at MSRP and hold forever.

Buying a used car off craigslist or from the classified listings on the back of the paper is a crap shoot. You could either get very lucky and get a great car or wind up with a big headache.

whats the saying when buying a used car? You’re buying someone else’s headache basically…lol

No door panels, but the steering wheel was shot. When I first got it 7-8 odd years ago, I ended up rewrapping in leather myself using a kit. $40 and a brand new steering wheel. Held up well over the years.

Edit: just realized you meant the paint, yeah that shit looked terrible. Scraped off the steering wheel and resprayed the peeling trim back to black.

that’s the market now, everything is overpriced.

As for buying a new one, of course a new car that’s $23k is going to be a safer buy but that’s really not the point of this discussion.

Toyota with a Pontiac badge?

That’s a good suggestion. Also the Geo Prism, another GM-badged Toyota.

I looked for those also; the only ones I saw on CarGurus look like they’d been shit at and hit.

The fact I had to google both the Prism and Vibe immediately marks my age.

In the wrong direction!

I actually thought the 2nd gen (or was there only one gen?) was awesome for the price. It was a really nice-looking car.

Get a Scooty ! And save the remaining $9k  J/K

If I were in the market, I would actually not even shell out $10k on a used car. I would search private parties on a $5k to $6k search and in agreement with @max_g, I would hunt for 2002 - 2006 Camry with under 150k Miles (Yes I know I wrote 150k). Believe it or not, in terms of reliability, these generations of the Camry easily beat their Honda counter parts and many hit above the 250k mile mark easily. Maintenance is cheap, parts if you do need to replace are readily available still at your local AutoZone, gas mileage is pretty decent still.
Not only will you be shelling out much less, if you are planning only to keep the car for a year, these cars have already shed off 90% - 95% of their depreciation hit and should be resaleable easily at or around the same price. Would be able to retain most of your money, may be lucky and all of it.

You actually did a good job rewrapping the steering wheel. The stitches seem tight/taught.

Every aftermarket job looks like crap but this looks stock.

That was my baby, I was always careful with her :relieved:

That’s Prizm :floppy_disk:

Geo put the M in Prize.

I have been driving my wife’s 2012 Camry SE for the last few years. I get a Carfax car care report monthly that shows that the trade in value is $7,300. Out of curiosity, I checked what similar models were priced at on Cars.com. For similar low mileage cars, the price ranged from 16K to 20K, for cars that did not appear to have as many options on them. We only paid $24K for the car brand new. Although I think it is a good car, I would not pay 16 - 20K for it now.
