What Tax do I pay on a lease if I reside in NY and lease in NJ/CT?

, ,

My first post please be kind lol, So I already know in NY taxes(8.875%) paid up front or rolled into lease payment what happens if I lease a car in NJ/CT ??? am I better off leasing outside NY or does it matter ???

You always pay sales tax in whatever state you register the car in. It doesn’t matter where you buy it.

Taxes go by your home state

The only thing that matters is where the car is registered, that who you pay the taxes to.

Didn’t think of the registrants state thank you .

Remember that taxes vary in NY by county so check that yours is indeed 8.875%

You can save in other ways, ie if a dealer in NJ or CT is more competitive. Plus BMWFS and MBFS (and perhaps some others) will allow MSD if you lease out of state.

Yeah I checked NY state 4.00% + Bronx county 4.875% , I asked about out of state cause of possible MSD but is it recommended if my Credit Score is over 800 and if I do MSD how much investment % do I get ??? and since its been 10 years since I last leased can I still get a good deal without (Loyalty/Grad/Military etc incentives)???

All depends on the car and months for example if you gave max MSDs on most cars you would save ~ 20 month now if that max msd is 2100 and your on a 36 month lease, then you save close to 720 dollars over that lease term and at the end your MsD gets refunded back to you

Most “good” to great deals here have at least a loyalty incentive if not more
You can get a better lease by researching how to negotiate sales price vs if you just went in with no knowledge but most likeley without incentives you won’t be able to get something termed here as a “unicorn” or amazing deal

Also MSD don’t matter on credit really , my credit was also 800+ but I chose to do MSDs on the car (max) to get my monthly lower

You pay the tax rate in effect where the car is registered.

Sometimes you can do better in NY – the doc fee is only $75, for instance, so you may get a better price of $500 less on the car, but if the doc fee is $500 more, that’s a wash.

I have found that, for the last year or so, NJ dealers seem more willing to play ball and many more are volume dealers, so they can cut better deals. I ended up going to NJ this time, when I previously stayed in NY.

As others mentioned too, you can do MSDs in CT or NJ, despite the fact hat you live in NY, so that might be a consideration too.

but let’s say I register the car in MD and I move to NJ where I change the tag to NJ do I get refund from MD(they tax on sell price)?

You should check to see if the Maryland provides refunds (check website) or if New Jersey provides a tax credit for tax already paid (check website)

In my experience, one usually needs to go beyond the 8 counties of NYC, LI and most of Westchester to find anything reasonable.

8 counties of NYC? :P. Are you counting Bergen, Nassau, and Westchester as boroughs?

Rockland is pretty awful, too, from what I have heard.

Yeah, there’s much less competition there. For instance, there’s Spring Valley BMW and not much else from them. There is no longer a Volvo dealership, and just in general, even with the mainstreams, there are very few in Rockland, comparative to other counties in the area.

They’ll likely be no luxury brands there soon if current trends continue

I think BMW will stay. But Ferrari and Maserati? Makes more sense either in Nyack or further up, in Orange County.

Lived in Rockland for 12yrs…confirmed there are no deals to be had there with any dealership. Spring Valley BMW stinks FYI…

NY in general sucks, but I can’t complain as i found my unicorn :unicorn: BMW in upper westchester.

FYI, I live in Bergen county, NJ now…

And see, my friend went to every dealer in the area (lives in Scarsdale, works in LIC), and got his last BMW 3 years ago before his current Volvo at Spring Valley. I guess it all depends on the car and timing.

Come to think of it, Bill Kolb Subaru sold (and still sells) a lot of cars (used to live less than a mile from that dealership and pass it by everyday) . Never went in to run numbers on any car as I was never really interested in Subies (other than the WRX)

I guess you’re right . Timing and car .
